A lot of my headcanons come from reading through the "Inkling/Octoling Biology" thread from a good while back (real shame nobody goes on that thread anymore, it was a fun read).

A good majority of Splatoon players that own a Switch have picked up the sequel, and the only ones left on OG Splatoon are either people who haven't gotten their hands on a Switch yet, or hackers (since Nintendo has all but given up on banning them by this point).

I COMPLETELY agree with this. There needs to be an A.I. that kicks in if a player is AFK for more than, say, ten seconds at the start of the match. There should probably be some visual marker that shows it's an A.I. and not just some weird player, though.

Just so you know, a good amount of these can be done with just messing around in private battles, like hide and seek, squid racer, elimination, them all together, sub barrage, and at least one other.

I have this problem myself as well, I've just been under the impression it was some unique error that nobody knew how to fix. (I guess I just wasn't using the right search terms or something...) Thank you both for letting me know it was a somewhat common issue and that it was possible to fix.
