Life threw me a curve ball but I'm finally getting back into Splat. I don't play nearly as much as my Splat1 days. I need a bit more variety. I still have a bunch of weapons I haven't tried in Splat2 though so there's plenty to learn.
If you're into console modding (custom firmware) then the WiiU is killer. You can unlock native GameCube compatibility, and the WiiU has HDMI so it's crisper than the original or Wii. But I think I still agree with others. If Splatoon is the only game you want then it's not a great value...

Wooden Sandals! Nice gear. Ruins of Ark Polaris is cool map but really depends on staying with your teammates - smash that "this way" button. Hydra Splatling on rails is fun.
