The fact that Nintendo nerfed the points from the votes category in a previous patch is just beyond stupid. All you get from letting unpopular teams win Splatfests more easily is more disappointed players. Not everything has to be hyper-competitive. In fact, the only thing that should be is Eggstra Work.

ehhh. at what point does it just become a community vote for which choice is best, then? why have splatfest battles at all if the most popular team should come out on top? splatfests are really about playing with friends and taking photos of the idols but the battling part is and should remain a competition, otherwise i don't see the point

It's a makeshift solution for an unsolvable problem. Optimally we'd spread players out evenly across the three teams by skill level. Except that's impossible.
At the end of the day why not have it be a popularity contest? Or at least have it be half the battle. I figure what matters most is the majority of players scraping away from the fest satisfied with the results.

yeah but people are always gonna be unsatisfied with splatfest results for one reason or another. i will never get it but it seems inevitable. i feel that weighing popularity more heavily would just cheapen the battling aspect for a lot of folks (including me tbh, even if i know splatfests are about fun and photo mode) and make that what people get upset about

If it were a popularity contest it'd make make people from less popular teams feel like they should not be playing because it's a foregone conclusion. If my less popular team will probably lose then why get invested?

You can't deliberately swing it too far one way or another or you're either making a larger amount of people unhappy or making the small groups even smaller. I get them trying to even it out

i’m like, physically incapable of caring about splatfest results, to be honest. turf only + my statistical insignificance in the grand scheme of things makes me feel no control over the outcome, so i choose to treat it more as a party than a competition. but it just makes sense to me that if we’re bothering to battle, the battles should matter more than the votes

I'm pretty sure this is this is the main reason why many people think things should be simplified back to a two-team model. Three times easier to balance.
Though I think it's fair to say that votes being worth 70 points compared to Open and Pro's 120 each is completely ridiculous. In Splatoon 2 it was a matter of which team won the most categories, with votes on equal ground to Open and Pro clout.

I do think the votes should be closer to equal to the rest of the categories in terms of points, but 1. it needs to be impossible to tie, and 2. winning all three battle-related categories has to lead to a win, otherwise winning would be impossible after a certain point and there's no point playing anymore.
