Octolings. Benthic octopuses are my favorite invertebrates due to the high intelligence common to coleoids, the freedom of bodily movement playing to that intelligence, and at least one kind either disguising itself as other organisms on the fly, or knowing how to use tools.
That said, there's a video with a more extensive study used for Splatoon 3, where both races are playable from the get-go.

i absolutely LOVE both, but to me Octolings kinda just... have the better everything, better style, better looks, better hair, better idols
they've got everything
but i still love playing Inklings, of course.

I prefer playing/using characters with interesting lore, which shouldn't surprise anyone that I play as an Octoling (more specifically, the Octoling Boy since he matches my IRL gender as well). So what is the interesting lore for Octolings? Well, it's the fact that whenever they cut off one of their tentacles, the tentacle that was cut off becomes a separate tentacle Octarian (Octolings still have the normal reproduction of requiring both a male Octoling and a female Octoling which guarantees a new Octoling being brought into the world).

I have an inexplicable preference toward Inklings. I do prefer octopi over squids in real life, though.

Squids are less edible, so I like playing as Inklings more. Also they just feel more interesting design-wise.

Inklings all the way i play octolings for the Afro bc it funny but otherwise i like playing inklings

I prefer Octolings... More or less.
If I'm being honest the only reason I say so is because I just like Octopuses a lot more so I'm kinda biased, but I feel design wise Inklings are better, specifically the mask and ear shapes, plus swim form...

That being said Octolings have the potential to be cooler sometimes I just think there aren't enough goated hairstyles for them yet (I think rival octoling hair would be cool...)

Also they just have a bit more interesting role on Inkling society, especially in Inkopolis where the great turf war was more relevant and Octo Expansion is really good.

I like both. Marie is an Inkling but a cuttlefish while Jeff and Mr. Nogami are both Inklings. Uncle Jeff is an Inkling too but just because my characters are Inklings doesn't mean I don't like Octolings. I just need to make a character that's an Octoling.

I like playing as a squid kid because they’re always smiling a little. The octolings are more serious. It actually works as anti-tilt for me, because when I start getting tilted I notice my little squidy guy is smiling and I’m like, “At least he’s having a good time.”

Hmmm... I love both in their own ways, but in general, I tend to play as Octoling more.
1.) AGENT 8 THEIR LORE IS SO DEEP
2.) You don't have to buy the expansion pass to be an Octoling. So, as stated in your form, I take advantage of that opportunity.
3.) ...I still haven't finished Octo Expansion... so....

I have always played as a male Inkling since I'm a man and started with Splatoon 1. In fact, I've never played a multiplayer mode as a female player character or Octoling. Though I did play Octo Expansion and Side Order as female Agent 8, as all official art shows Captain 3 and Agent 8 as opposite sexes.
