if i were to sum it up I'd go with the boy inklings being cool and girl inklings being cute :'3, tho it could also be vice versa! I think it depends on the unique design that someone comes up with when they choose gear for their inkling.

I love their designs, sounds, gear, weapons pretty much everything about them! I also love how customizable an inkling can be from their hair, eyes, skin colour, clothing, weapons it feels really nice. I adore their colours as well, they always look so nice.

there's so much more I could say but I'll leave it for now ^_^

One thing I’m still wishing for is for more gear with different appearances based on the gender of your squid.
I'm not at all a fan of this; what if I want to have the boy's school cardigan with the girl's original hair? It's bad enough to me that the pants are gender-exclusive; I think I'd be cool to be the girl and have cargo shorts, but I'd still keep the original pants because they're my favorite. I can understand having exclusive hair though, because there's little other than that to differentiate the boy and the girl.

@BashfulBetta I guess I'm lucky because I don't think I ever ran into them. I've modded the game, but the only time I ever went online (Turf War; you're a total a**hole if you touch Ranked even for something menial like this) was to test if I could successfully change the sub and special of a weapon, which is something I'm not aware anyone has ever done before. (People have changed weapon damage and whatnot, which I'll get to in a minute.) I was half expecting it to disconnect the second the match started due to an error, but surprisingly, it actually did work, shown in this thread: https://gbatemp.net/threads/splatoon-modding-hub.425670/page-194

The problem with Splatoon is that the most dangerous stuff is the easiest to hack; weapon parameters, like fire rate and damage, are stored in text files that look like this:
Code:
{
    {
        "mRepeatFrame"
        6
    }
    {
        "mTripleShotSpan"
        0
    }
    {
        "mInitVel"
        22.00000000
    }
    {
        "mDegRandom"
        6.00000000
    }
    {
        "mDegJumpRandom"
        15.00000000
    }
    {
        "mSplashSplitNum"
        5
    }
    {
        "mKnockBack"
        0.00000000
    }
    {
        "mInkConsume"
        0.00900000
    }
    {
        "mInkRecoverStop"
        20
    }
    {
        "mMoveSpeed"
        0.72000003
    }
    {

        0.34999999
    }
    {

    }
    {

        18.00000000
    }
    {

        13.00000000
    }
    {
        "mDegBias"
        0.25000000
    }
    {
        "mDegBiasKf"
        0.02000000
    }
    {
        "mDegJumpBias"
        0.40000001
    }
    {
        "mDegJumpBiasFrame"
        60
    }
}
All you need to do is modify the numbers; anyone with any knowledge of the game can figure out what these fields mean immediately.

...I hope I didn't derail this conversation too much, lol.

In Japan; something cool gets announced, and then you find out it's a Japanese exclusive. I got this cool shirt at least:

Considering the number of fans on this side of the (other) pond who leap on new merch when it's announced...myself included...and the fact that a lot more of it's been showing up in stores like Toys 'R' Us etc, I think they're realizing they have a decent merchandising market over here as well now. At least, it seems that way/I hope so.

nah, it's all good. i understand what you're saying and how coding works on a modded wii u
sounds to me like, if you can go this far on a wii u, it's possible to do the same on the switch
(also, to anyone else reading this and my previous comments, i don't pirate myself)

You have to wonder what caused what; did Splatoon's exclusive merchandise and heavy advertisement over there fuel game sales, or vice versa? (I heard at least the first one was priced cheaper there as well.) It's like Microsoft and the Xbox in Japan; they don't do any advertising over there because they don't sell, which is probably in part due to no advertising. I was originally thinking that Splatoon 2's regional matchmaking was due to Nintendo misunderstanding what fans in the US, Europe, and Australia want, but I'm starting to believe the real reason is to appease the larger Japanese audience, as they then don't have to deal with the lag from international players and their lobbies still fill up quick.
I wish there was more merch in the states. UK's lucky enough to have the hats purchaseable from the Nintendo website. Over here that stuff is quite rare. If Nintendo could get more Splatoon merch out here, I think they would. Initially I think they didn't see it taking off as a "brand", so they didn't localize and import anything for launch. Remember, Nintendo was also a lot more conservative with merch and brands in 2015. In just two years, things have changed a lot. There's more of a emphasis on Nintendo as a brand than just a game company. After years of little to no merch, we've now seen a entire array of Nintendo product in the US, alongside a Mcdonalds promo, Yogurtland promo, and the Universal Theme Parks' partnership. Since Splatoon' explosion in popularity, we've slowly seen merch slip over. The manga took two years to localize, and now the Bandai merch is just making its way to US Barnes and Noble stores. Jakks Pacific also exclusively has merch rights in the US, so we're just now getting a lot of exclusive merch that is more geared to US markets. (Compare Jakks' Splatoon action figures to Bandai's dress-up dolls. Same toy, very different execution!) 3 years since launch may seem a bit insane for merch, but remember, it took 15 years for Animal Crossing and Kirby merch to get here stateside.

Since Splatoon' explosion in popularity
It's doing well in the US, but I'm not quite sure about "explosion"; half of the people I know with a Wii U don't have Splatoon and over half of the people I know with a Switch don't have Splatoon 2; I don't know if my situation is an anomaly, but I think I saw something that said the attachment rate for Splatoon 2 for people with a Switch was "only" 20% in the US. It appears nothing short of an explosion in Japan though; I don't think anyone was anticipating its level of success over there.

the Bandai merch is just making its way to US Barnes and Noble stores.
They might as well bring it to JCPenny or Sears. :/

I'd like Bandai's figures if the original hair was an option. The Jakks Pacific figures look a little bit freaky, but you can pose them, (although I heard the foot articulation is really limited) so it's a tradeoff.

The feet have limited rotation, but that's it. The main problem is with the girl Inkling figure - her knees are basically double-jointed and will bend forwards as well as back :'D

Bandai's done a great job so far actually, especially with the weapons sets, so I'm looking forward to seeing the kisekae figures up close and in person. They're half the size of the WoN Inkling figures, incidentally. Jakks seems to be doing their best, but they have problems with screening on the faces. We've gone way off-topic, though...if you want a more in-depth discussion of specific toys/collectibles, I do have a thread for such things =p

To stay with the subject and still be on topic....I wish they did better with the humanoid inkling plushies. I generally don't buy plushies, but I really wanted some cute inkling plushies. Sadly they look umm...not so great. It's not like it's made by people who can't do it, since the Callie and Marie ones look pretty cute.

The squid plushies look really nice atleast. Put a bobble hat on 'em and it's one of the cutest things ever.

I edited a couple of things in my second post.

I think the issue is that the Inkling are very deformed with those plushies. The inklings are already deformed, they have stylized large hands, feet, and hands.

If you look at this render, you can see the head is pretty big, the hands rather large,and the shoes pretty big too. Yet it's all kept within basic human proportions. Nothing too out of wack....
YIKES! WHAT IS THIS?!

Alright, now lets over-analyze a plush toy. I think this successfully ruins everything appealing about the Inkling. The head is blown way big obviously, but there's a even bigger issue. The wrong parts are emphasized. Why are the eyebrows so tiny? They should have been bigger, way bigger. The hands are also too tiny, they're much more prominent in the actual design. The feet are large and comical, yet the hands aren't. It's weird and makes the feet stand out like a sore thumb. And then there's the large cranium...what is this, a Pearl plush? If you look at the render above, which this plush is clearly based on, the Inkling is wearing goggles. Given this one's head being so egg-like, I almost want to think the plush had goggles on at some point in development, and they were later removed for cost reasons. It's just way too noticeable and bad, no designer would set out to make something like that.

It's that fivehead he has going on there that does it. Marie, Callie and (I assume) the Girl all got off easy in that department, as they have bangs in their hairstyles =p
Poor Boy got the short straw as a plushie, but he won as an action figure, so... 50/50?
Speaking as someone who's made plushies, feet are tricky at best. His don't look very sculpted at all. I think if they'd used an extra panel or two on the sides we'd have less of the stomped-on-foot effect.
