Is it normal to be this freaking bad at splatoon 3?

I've played splatoon 2 and 3 for 300+ hours, and recently, I've been losing non-stop. Admittedly, I'm trying out a new weapon, but i thought I was getting pretty good. My win-loss is 15/29 which is the lowest it's ever been, and it's just getting tiresome getting KO'd and losing every match.

Is it normal to have a ratio that abysmal?

It's not just you, it's that too many players left the game, while Splatoon 3 still has a huge player base, the neglect from Nintendo on fixing major issues caused them to give up on the game, which is part of the reason why you might have been faced with people who has a lot more skill.

I saw this shocking revelation when I played the Blaster-themed Challenge that involved Tower Control, the highest I could get to was 1900, which surprised me that it didn't at least get me to the 20%. This shows that Splatoon 3 lost a lot of players, which even caused Nintendo to change how Big Run is scored (which is a positive change for once, not everything with tiers has to be super competitive after all).

I wouldn't be surprised if Eggstra Work and Challenges also get similar changes like Big Run in the future, since it's now that Nintendo is seeing how bad it is neglecting a mode of the game can be, heck they even added more timeslots to Challenges (something they should've done from the introduction of the mode, which further adds to the idea of the neglect of the mode).

If playing multiplayer games since CoD 4 through MW III (the 2011 one) taught me anything, which I see happening with my time in Splatoon, you're gonna have a period of amazing plays and a period of abysmal plays. I had a match where I got 11-0 Painbrush and 16-0 Rapid Blaster Deco. And conversely, I had match where I lost with an embarrassing KDR ranging from 0-6 to 1-7 (which I'm sure was an assist).

Alternatively, you can also either take a break or watch your matches and see what went wrong. Both help but the latter especially.

90% of my streaks are always horrible, don’t worry
Its most likely who your up against and who your team is, because the other team could always be filled with people who have years of splatoon under their belt meanwhile your team is just some people who don’t play that often
Its nothing wrong with you, although you can review your strategies and try to figure out if there is a better one you could go for?
It could also be your gear and weapons, since every now and again i get a loosing streak with a weapon i main and when i pick another one suddenly im winning a ton. Although theres a good chance thats not it.
Just throwing things against the wall and seeing what will stick!

As multiplayer games age, casual players tend to drop off over time, players who keep actively grinding get stronger and stronger, and fewer new players come in late to refresh the low end of total beginners. So the average opponent is getting stronger over time. This is a normal phenomenon everywhere. If it feels harder to keep up these days, that's because it absolutely is.

(Ideally matchmaking should be able to continue finding opponents close enough to your skill level that this shouldn't be noticeable unless you're on the far ends of the bell curve, you shouldn't notice the average moving if you're not just playing against the average, but Splatoon's matchmaking is complete garbage so)

I saw this shocking revelation when I played the Blaster-themed Challenge that involved Tower Control, the highest I could get to was 1900, which surprised me that it didn't at least get me to the 20%. It should be noted here that Glicko-2 is entirely relative. If the average player gets stronger, ratings will deflate accordingly, so a 1900 today doesn't mean the same thing as a 1900 several seasons ago.

Annoyingly Nintendo never shows deviation and keeps the calculation matches opaque so we don't know the initial parameters, if they do any seeding based on past results, or how strong that seeding is. That could skew it a bit, but at least on paper the cutoffs shouldn't actually vary too much, even as the playerbase changes, because the ratings themselves should be expected to change moreso than the cutoffs.

I def understand how you feel. A lot of it has to do with the matchups you get, plus how you're feeling moment to moment. You can't always be at your A game, and it's okay. Sometimes I feel like I'm doing amazing, and then the very next match I get absolutely destroyed. There's many more factors at play other than your own skill, and a lot of those factors you can't quite control. As long as you learn to accept your skill level, you'll have much more fun with the game

my current anarchy ratio is 18/31... and i've been feeling okay about my recent play. ouch. though some of that might be that a friend and i jumped into a TC rotation on robo rom-en last night and then realized we, uh, didn't know the tower path on that map and were constantly losing track of where the opposing team had taken it...

honestly i think being concerned about how your numbers compare to others' numbers alone... is neither helpful for mindset nor actual gameplay. 'cause, like, with the question of 'is my W/L ratio normal' there's two answers you can get:
  • no, it's not 'normal' - in which case you just feel worse about your skills to no benefit
  • yes, everybody's ratio looks like that - which helps boost your self esteem in the moment, but if you're still losing a ton and getting frustrated, it doesn't really help beyond that, yknow?
i don't really think there's a 'normal' W/L ratio to worry about. every player's ratio is gonna look different, and the same player's ratio will look different on different days. to repeat some of what has been said, maybe you're having some off days, maybe splatoon's matchmaking system is pitting you against experienced players or a coordinated team, maybe you still aren't used to the weapon you're using, maybe you didn't realize the tower path on robo rom-en does not take opponents straight to your team's spawn but over to the LEFT, maybe you're thinking too hard about your loss streak while playing and it's impacting your play... there's so many factors that can go into if you win or lose games, and skill is just one of those

it might be helpful to put overall results aside for a second and try to understand why you're losing games, or how you can improve. and, yeah, 'all the casual players left' might be an answer, but i mean more along the lines of... if you look at your replays, can you find any patterns (e.g. you're trying to approach the objective a specific way each time and just getting splatted for it)? since you're playing a new weapon, have you tried looking into youtube tutorials or just footage of more experienced players using that weapon?

as a disclaimer, i am... not a competitive player but someone who wants to be one. so i approach the game as somebody who always wants to improve. maybe you're not looking for that - maybe you play casually, and your goal is less 'get better every day' and more 'lose less often so that this game i play for fun can stop being frustrating instead'. so some of my advice might seem like more effort than you want to put into studying a game you play casually. and that's fine! but take what you want away from my rambling.
