Is Splatoon fun anymore?

Lately I've just been finding that Splatoon just... Hasn't been the way it use to be...
Like, whenever I use to do turf war, it never use to be so freaking brutal. Freaking higher levels play too damn competitively
Which is fine and dandy and all. I'm all for playing competitive if you want but I really don't get why people take turf war so serious now... = __ =
It's pretty much turned into ranked battles now
In ranked, I get it. You've got something to lose at stake so if you wanna go all out, be my guest. I won't get salty at you (maybe a little but hey, that's life bruh) but when it comes to turf, you bet your sea snails I'm going to be on salty squid!

Like, I should NOT have to fear for my life while I'm literally NEAR MY OWN SPAWN
It just doesn't make the game fun when all you do is keep getting splat as soon as you leave your own base and the enemy is just spawn camping...

And besides, if you're not getting your *** handed to you by a level 50 you're more than likely to be cussing and ranting over the constant disconnections from matches...
Now I know Nintendo's internet isn't the greatest but did it somehow get worse?
Cause seriously, I never remember dealing with disconnections or lag this bad when Splatoon first came out...

I don't know, I mean hell. I'm still going to play cause I love to get my ink on but, it's just frustrating to deal with you know?
Even some of my friends agree with me about this; and I even heard that this is why most players are just quitting...

And so we're left with two extremes
Newbies and the Competitive

Like I said, I don't think it's wrong to be competitive in Splatoon. It can spice things up and be fun sometimes
But when you have to deal with people who won't even let people have fun, it's just
Why even bother playing?
What's the point of trying to have fun when someone's just going to trap you in your spawn or constantly splat up your squid party...

Anyways, I think that's all I have to say.
Just needed to get this off my chest...

I've just been really frustrated about this and if you wanna call me salty or whatever
Go right ahead, at this point I really don't care anymore.... = __ =

And so we're left with two extremes
Newbies and the Competitive
This is a point that is spot on and something I've been saying recently regarding ranked itself as well, even in the high ranks.

Overall I think TW is brutal for a number of reasons, and moreso than before.
  • More better players overall
  • They changed the matchmaking from "anything goes - there is no matchmaking" to actually trying to pair you more with people of your own skill level a number of patches ago. The point was so that poor newbies don't get endlessly crushed by skilled players and to make it more of an interesting challenge to play TW for skilled players who otherwise ignored it as simply boring. I believe it uses an invisible "rank" for TW similar to ranked itself - so you might be seeing difficult because you're a "Turf war A rank" so it's mixing you in with ranked-world S+ ranks who are only TW A ranks because they don't play TW very much.
  • Because the game has zero means of practicing with new weapons and strategies and such in ranked for many higher skilled players TW is just "ranked practice mode" for getting a handle on weapons they don't often play but they otherwise bring their skill with them.
  • Especially around a Splatfest a lot of top skill players that otherwise don't play TW jump into TW to level up their Splatfest shirts, and after Splatfest to level up all the clothing they just bought slots for and to test out new gear sets they've rerolled (see also: ranked practice mode.)
  • Dropouts are common in TW because 1, PPL without time to play will just join in and kill the power when they run out of time 2, PPL with bad net connections that still want to play will play TW but not ranked because at least they can play SOMETHING (That one case I can sympathize...except during splatfest), and 3, the ones with bad net connections that DO try ranked won't make it very far, so after B- or so they kind of vanish.
  • Lag. Seriously, I've seen it get worse and worse, especially during certain times of day where I THOUGHT I was facing against super amazing superior opponents, such as during this splatfest, only to discover that the people on the Top 100 list were the people I was playing against and holding my own against and the people destroying me and spawncamping me were not on that list at all, meaning they're NOT exceptional players and are in fact worse than players I was doing well against. Lag has to be the answer there, probably whichever part of the world is farthest is playing in numbers during those times (excluding Japan.)
Getting spawncamped is generally a result of bad teammates or bad matchmaking where the other team is simply of better skill than yours. Good teams don't get spawncamped even by good opponents. Poor teams do, or relatively poor teams compared to their opponents. More times than not, it's the games fault in the matchmaking system. It can also be the result of bad lag as I've recently discovered during Splatfest, even if you don't see the teleporting, you might be 3/4 a second behind the action and therefore it's not that they have great aim and kill you the nanosecond you pop out from behind a wall. It's that they killed you when you were on your way TO that wall half a second ago before they were even on your screen, and the game only registered it on your way out. You can't win in a round you can't even see what's shooting at you. Chalk it up to global peer-to-peer serverles game hosting.

But the point you bring up is a big one. The game is just about a year old. There's a reason COD and Battlefield get replaced on an annual cycle. By now the average players have mostly moved onto new games and had their fun with Splatoon, the Christmas Noobs have moved on. So you're left with increasingly smaller player variety where only the people who are REALLY into Splatoon (i.e. the people hanging out here, and r/splatoon, etc) are the people playing. And those people are likely to be the people who are very good. There's the really awful noobs, and then the expert players. As a result even in high ranks the A's are playing like the S's played just a few months ago, because with less poor players to promote players up the ranks, the ranks are more of a spreading out of the finer shades of skill of what were once all the top. So sort of B+ through S+ are all really just what used to be S's, just spread out further about HOW good an S you are. That's an exaggeration, but yes, metrically, the skill levels are ramping up because with less people at the bottom, more from the top get pushed down, and more people leave as a result, and it compounds the problem.

Though with the announcements that NX is almost a full year away, Nintendo's going to have to milk Splatoon and keep it going a lot longer than they anticipated. They might keep injecting some life into it...so it....Stays Fresh....

For a while, I was in the same boat as you. I was having much less fun with the game, getting more frustrated, feeling more angry after losses than I used to, etc. It led me to play very infrequently, which really hurt my overall skill in the game. This discouraged me even more, to the pint where I was kinda done with the game.

However, two things got me back into the game. The first, I started to play at a different time of day, as I found playing from 6pm-9pm PST had the most skilled player base. As a college student, my schedule is very loose, meaning I can play at odd hours. I play Splatoon around 1pm-4pm PST usually, and I can feel the difference. People seem much more casual in turf, and ranked isn't any more difficult/easier, which is to be expected.

The second thing was all the new balances. I know some of them aren't popular, but I love the current balance to the game, and that made me really excited to get back into it. And I love the weapon variety I see in all the modes now, which makes the game more fun.

So in your case, I'm not sure what to suggest. It sounds like you still love the game, but don't feel like you have as much fun. I wound up taking a break, playing very rarely before getting back into it, which helped. But, that hurt my skill level a bit, and it took some practice to get back into the groove of the game.

9:00-12:00PM ET....the universally acknowledged time of Squid infamy....the time I end up playing most days :(

It's a weird time because I can SEE the difference. I can play round after round leading up to that time and it feels normal. And suddenly you get one of THOSE rounds. Then it's a little better. And then it starts...round after round after round of brutal shutouts.

It's not just TW that happens in though. It happens in ranked too, which has always confounded me. How does the SAME rank become MASSIVELY more difficult at a certain time of day? That makes no sense! I used to attribute it to all the Japanese legendary players and assuming it had to do with whatever time of day it was in Japan (11:00AM or so, which also made no sense.)

(Repeat topic from the Splatfest thread for those interested) This Splatfest and the Top 100 lists taught me what I said above - I'm not sure the 9:00PM issue has anything to do with being outskilled at ALL. The players shutting me out in splatfest were NOT as good as the players I could fight as equals earlier, they didn't even rate on the Top 100 and I was playing as equals or near equals with names in the top 20 of those lists. That means those are people who STARTED as upper S+ ranks and kept winning from there. So if I could go toe to toe with upper tier S+' who basically never lost a game all day and either come away beating them or losing them but not so badly that I felt overwhelmed...and the super Japanese elite weren't even playing in that splatfest....but then got crushed and utterly spawncamped by players that didn't even make that list. And then at the end defeated a team with a LOW fest power who were mostly S+'s (meaning they lost a LOT of games that day too! Even more than me!) who were these people and why was I losing to them?

The obvious answer is lag - we're not facing The Best Players at that 9:00-12:00 window. We're facing the laggiest players (or being made to be laggy ourselves.) The only question is where is the lag coming from? It's not Europe and the Middle East - I saw the same thing the previous splatfest when they weren't playing with us. So it's from SOMEWHERE in the NoA region. it could be our own local US infrastructure that gets overwhelmed at that time of day (corporations running terabytes worth of cloud backups and such maybe? People streaming television?) It could be other regions lagging out - it's not S. America or the Caribbean as our Squidboards friends in those regions seem to experience similar lag at the same times as we do. A friend on the boards here in Asia recently told me something I didn't know: Most of Asia aside from the Middle East and Japan is actually NoA territory. He gets some nasty lag at hours that I generally don't see it and splatfests are always laggy there. I've played TW with him in friend lobbies and I saw attrocious lag in there - he was playing with a bunch of Japanese players and didn't see much lag.

So my working theory about "everyone is better after 9:00PM ET" is that they're the same as they are the rest of the day, we're just on the wrong side of the lag. During that time there might be a majority of players in Asia playing, and the sucky peer to peer system (one of the players is the server) assigns the server in Asia since most players in the lobby are local to it. So we're the lone player in the lobby that's running half a second behind everyone else, and of course it's going to be sucky and our team will lose badly because they're basically playing 3v4 - we're not really there.

It's not 100% - if you luck out and end up the host or have some other western hemisphere host you'll get a normal match. But you'll be so frustrated from the 10 losses prior you'll probably not play well :)

The problem there is 100% Nintendo's fault for running a global lobby system without regional servers. But that's also the price of not having a monthly fee like PSN and XBL.

While I don't like the result I'm pretty confident that the "time of day" problem comes mostly down to "global servers suck and we're lagging out in a game that's too fast for it's own good (time to kill on most weapons is faster than even moderate internet latency)" problems.

However the skill base in the game is still increasing due to the more "average" players leaving it. On the up side, if you're not the sort that cares about rank much, there's very few actual noobs playing at all. Even C+ rank shows some solid playership, as I've seen on my alts. In many ways my C+ teams were the best teams I've had in any rank - they played the objective, payed attention, stayed alert, and actually escorted the RM! If only my A through S teams would do the same

In TW, I'd really advise rolling with the punches though. Losses can be fun to if it was a good match. If it's not a good match...you're either being paired with awful teammates (it happens a lot) much more competent opponents (it happens a lot) or your lagging off the lobby so hard they mostly see you as standing still and shooting in the air (I'm starting to learn, it happens a lot.)

But what this thread describes I'm highly familiar with. And when high rank players are familiar with this situation of getting totally beat back to your spawn, you know there's something going on other than there's just too many good players ;)

Take a break, play some other stuff then come back to have fun. Fierce people in TW didn't come today, maybe you're stressed out now and need to rest a little bit of being constantly splatted by spawn killers.

Take care!

Heh, yeah I suppose. I mean it's kind of really rare that I get spawn camped
If anything, it's mostly that my team and I kept having our ink constantly covered up by the enemy or the enemy either kept keeping a certain are secure. Like on Flounder Heights the middle area. My team kept getting put on Flounder Heights and we... We just kept getting our ***** handed to us ^^;;;
Also to mention it didn't help that because of constant losing and getting splat repeatedly by the same person I quickly became quite salty... And I personally know that when I get salty or angry during Splatoon, I become MUCH more sloppy which results in getting me killed more... ; w ;
Which is why I try to keep my cool and not let it get to me but it still does sometimes you know? Such as trying to refrain from getting revenge splats, the main goal I should focus on is inking turf.

But yeah, I think you brought up some valid reasons for Splatoon's downfall into this "madness"
I just really needed to get this off my chest but it helps knowing I'm not just the only one to feel this way ;w;

I think that'd probably be a good idea for me to try. Or maybe even reducing how much time I spend playing.
It could help make things more fun, or even just doing private battles with friends for fun and stuff.

I don't think I'd lose skill from taking a long break but I probably would be rusty and need to practice in octo valley to get in the swing of things again |'D

I don't want to sound like I'm simply blaming everything on lag, but something was definitely up with this last night. I could hit people 5 or 6 times with a splattershot only for them to bubble. Or I'd hit someone with a direct burst bomb, an indirect burst bomb, and several shots, then they would swim through my ink and splat me. Some of it, of course, was poor play on my part, especially after I went on tilt. But when two of the most accurate guns in the game (CJS and Splash) are shooting through people and I'm getting splatted by ink brushes well outside their range, something is up.

On topic: I like TW the best, so I play hard even if it is unranked. I try to get to "So Hawt" so that I can get 1000coins. Then I might goof off. In order to do that, I sometimes have to play really hard. Last night we had a disconnect at the start when I was testing the L-3D. I had to play out of my mind in order to win, but I also exploited the fact that they had a level 6 on their team. So, sorry if I've ever ruined your day.

Splatoon in a nutshell :)

Generally when the same person keeps splatting you it's because that person is a better player, or knows the map better and knows where to camp (and possibly you keep walking into the same trap. General rule is the trap-setting squids tend to suck badly in a 1v1 fair fight :) OR if you keep shooting at them 1v1 and losing...yeah...might be lag.

I don't want to sound like I'm simply blaming everything on lag, but something was definitely up with this last night. I could hit people 5 or 6 times with a splattershot only for them to bubble. I think last night I played solo earlier than "the bad time" and then squadded through the bad time, then went to TW for the rest to work on H3 a bit. The two rounds I did play in ranked solo I saw some of that as well during the bad time but it was hard to pin specifics on lag since I was using bamboozler and my team refused to claim zones even when I'd score triple splats and they were standing right next to the unclaimed zone.

In TW, I definitely saw some ugly lag. Not sure if shots were going through because H3 is H3....shots ALWAYS go through people. But I can't say that I don't think more should have hit than did. H3 is VERY sensitive to lag.

The prior night I was playing with splash as well, and for a while it was doing very well. And then once the map change and typical bad time started in, it started missing more shots and took longer to kill while I just sprayed and sprayed. I picked up on the lag issues and switched to splattershot to mitigate the 5hko lag delays. I think based on my wep choices I'm less likely to notice the lag problems directly, but on the rare occasions I play midrange shooters it becomes so much more obvious when really fast weapons don't hit things as I shoot foes (or h3 becomes a 5hko.)

Some maps amplify it too which makes a rotation "seem bad. Ahnchov might be the worst. The fan lifts brutalize lag. the conveyors in piranha used to do it more thann they do now. I see tons of full scale teleporters in very vertical levels like flounder and depot. The way the games handle the drops seems to create trouble with lag.

Sometimes that is the case but then when it comes they end up on my team they end up sucking or if they're on the enemy i manage to splat then a lot. It's kind of like 50/50 |'D
Either they're good or just having an off day which we all have uwu

People have been spawn camping turf war since the game came out, it isn't anything new. Just learn to deal with it and don't get so salty lol.

Honestly, I find when I'm playing with a friend, like @Award, then I tend to not get as salty. I can at least commiserate with that person right at that moment, which helps alleviate the lingering saltiness.

Splatoon is what you make it. The game can be fun if we allow ourselves to have fun. If we take it too seriously, it's going to suck out all the fun of the game. If we allow ourselves to get salty over every little thing in the game, it's going to make it so Splatoon isn't enjoyable anymore. It's really mostly about what you make of the game. It can remain a fun game or it can be a terrible one depending on how you feel.

Personally, Splatoon is still very fun for me. My friends keep me coming back to this game. It's fun to play with them both casually and competitively. I've met a lot of amazing people through this game and they are really what keep me coming back constantly. Originally, I had no intention of joining the competitive side of Splatoon but I got pulled into it anyway. :P It's been really fun to make the switch to being competitive with the game and I've really enjoyed it. If you're struggling with having fun with Splatoon, try playing with some friends. It's often easier to enjoy yourself when you know at least one person in the room - even if you land on the opposite team.

naw man its a ****in horrible game pos laggy noobs cant aim or shoot for **** n always gotta spawncamp liek the little ***** bitches they are goddamn worst game of all time nintendo's doomed waaaaaah

Fun or not, it has to be doing something right, because I've been coming back for more just about every single chance I get for 10 months straight. The only other game to have me hooked so badly was Smash 4, whose position was promptly usurped once I got Splatoon.

Can it get very frustrating at times? Does that happen very often? Well, yeah, I can't deny that. Yet no amount of salt can stop this squidiot from getting his fix. I swear it'll be the death of me XÞ.

this, basically.

i'm still playing very often, even when i put it aside occasionally to play other games (like i'm currently working my way through alien: isolation and the other week i 100%'d twilight princess HD).

i also am a big smasher since 64, and was quite good at brawl online even though it was ****ty back then (the online and the game itself). i was pretty big on smash4 until splatoon came out, but actually i'm more into splatoon now than i ever was into smash4 or any other smash really. i've never been this good at a multiplayer game?

right now i'm learning how to play sloshers, though i still am working on ranked squiffer in between. when i'm playing turf wars, i think it's important not to take winning and losing too seriously. it's MUCH more random than ranked, especially because many players are doing what they want, trying out new weapons and whatnot, and only the last 1/6 of the match counts for anything. it can easily be rage-inducing if you're focusing on winning, for little benefit. aka: you shouldn't.

instead, focus on delivering great plays. even if your team is massacred one round, the good players will get a sense for you and know to watch out for you or be excited to be teamed with you in the next round.
really, i find turf wars is more about individual plays than matches.

Vast majority of TW players I run into are S ranked or better and are usually out to spill more blood than ink. This phenomenon would probably be alleviated if there were some way to play other game modes outside of ranked battles.

Until then, I'll be playing ranked to relax and turf war to sweat.

As a long time level 50, I've noticed quite a few changes in turf wars in the past few months. It seems like everyone is getting more aggressive and the turf wars are getting more and more out of hand. Is that a bad thing? Well, I guess for less experienced players it certainly is (and even for other level 50's. I personally like the occasional super crazy and intense battles, but then we have the highly competitive level 50 players restarting or playingnew files as well, which can definitely make chaotic for the poor level one players who really are playing for the first time. Turf wars definitely aren't what they used to be. Sometimes squids just seriously go crazy in singular non-ranked turf wars. It's unbelievable. And unfortunately, I have to fight the crazy squids by being a little crazy myself. The turf wars before sometime earlier this year seemed to be fine. Then something just changed for me a couple months after the new year. Just... Wow. I don't even know how I go a few rounds without getting splatted at all. Sometimes the only way to describe the center of the map is just pure chaos.

In conclusion, R.I.P. the original turf wars before people started developing crazy strategies.
