When it comes to shooters I'm not a big fan of many shooters. There are some I like to play, but not any I would say I love except for one Jet Squelcher. One of the identity of the weapon I love is it role of being a mobile anchor weapon and how it can work with more faster comps. But I need to point something out I said one of the identity the other weapon identity is one that is more well known and is the complete opposite. So let break it down in this vent/history post thing about my favorite shooter Jet Squelcher.

So in Splatoon 1 Jet first kit was nothing really special it had wall and strike which was ok I guess wall was a tool that Jet could use to protect itself, and strike was a good special to support your team, but we don't care about that kit nobody cares about bootleg (and less cool) heavy splatling.
We all know what we're here for GIVE IT UP FOR CUSTOM JET!!!! With burst bomb and kraken this is in my opinion the kit that defined Jet Squelcher it gave Jet the identity that a lot of people love. The weapon plays more aggro while still being the team's anchor. Burst bomb allows it to quickly paint its feet and combo for a 2-3 hit kill which made the weapon kill time great and do we even need to talk about kraken? Its splat 1 kraken it explains itself.
The sub and special was perfect for the weapon in my eyes I don't know how else to say it. Lets hope that Jet keeps the identity that Custom Jet gave it

We move on to splat 2 and it doesn't instead we see the beginning of Jet becoming the weapon that it is now. We got Jet with mist and missiles the complete opposite of splat 1 Cjet as it has no aggro potential at all the main instead the weapon spends the entire match farming for missiles. yippee, but whatever the vanilla kit in splat 1 was also the same not being all to interesting.
So we just got to wait for the second kit eventually we got it. 11-3-17 we got the return of my beloved Cjet with burst bomb (YES) and for the special stingray (DAMMIT). So guess what Cjet does just guess. Once again spend the entire match sitting back and farming special. Twice in a row we get special spam weapons that is some terrible luck right there.
But its not all to bad Cjet still had burst bomb which still somewhat allows the weapon to play aggresively not as well as Cjet in splat 1, but still possible in some way. So as long as Jet keeps it burst we should be fine.

Eventually splatoon 3 releases and every weapon is availble at launch which includes Jet Squelcher for its kit it gotten angle shooter and vac. I'm not going to sugarcoat this. This kit blows hard. angle shooter was a water down burst bomb that didn't even allow the weapon to 2 shot combo until much later. Vac (While I love the special) Took away the main gun and made jet more vulunarble.
That is three kits in a row where jet sat back and farmed. That hurts, but no matter if there is one thing that is consistent with jet its burst bomb on Cjet. So we just got to wait until Cjet is revealed so we could get that sweet, sweet burst bomb.
Fresh season is revealed along with a new and returning special. Kraken which would of been a great reference kit for Cjet as we saw on the other kraken kits revealed and Chumps a special that was replacing missiles on more problematic weapons like Zap and Clash? (Show of hands. who in the world was complaining about Clash getting to many missiles?)
Both of these specials would of been great on jet so let see we got none of those, but instead storm. You know what storm ain't half bad it can work with jet. Now let see what sub it got it should be pretty obvious what it get it got! Mist its Toxic Mist... Everything hurts. This kit only hope for playing agressively is farming storm that's it.
Which once again makes jet a special spammer, I'm seeing a pattern here and I hate it. and the Vjet kit isn't any good because it got marker. So in splat 3 Jet only special spam and nothing else. Except the special being spammed ain't even great specials to be spamming for reasons. I kind of get why they gave Jet such meh kits because of how strong it was in splat 2, but that because we gave it the most busted specials in the game it had nothing to do with the main weapon being to good (Especially burst bomb man what the heck >:[ )

Its crazy to think how Jet went from this aggro anchor type weapon to barfing out 15 million specials per game and staying out of fights. Its pretty upsetting seeing this weapon loss of its identity. The crazy thing is it's not even because of main weapon changes like Dynamo getting omega nerfed and still not recovering from it years later. Its simply because the kits being worse.
Of course you might be reading this and asking why do I care this much, and its because there is nothing quite like jet in my eyes except for maybe dousers but it has it own host of problems and heavy splatling in a way (Which got kraken, but not jet ok I see how it is), but its not jet in it doesn't have the same speed and aggro potential as jet. So here's to hoping that 3rd kit rumor is true and jet goes back to its aggro ways Either that or it gets sensor/wail

Great thread but I do disagree with one point on how the main weapon isn't at fault for the playstyle it had in S2.
Outside of the general shooter buffs that the devs gave to the entire weapon class, they also buffed its paint so now it wasn't just better at fighting but also better at painting.

I don't blame them for being worried about repeating the same mistake in S3 but but they seem to be really stubborn on reverting any previous shooter buffs so giving Jet mediocre kits was their way of balancing the weapon.
You could argue that they weren't giving it weaker options with the intention of holding it back but it seems like such an obvious decision here.
It's unfortunate considering that we did get a backline Kraken with cLiter but having it on Jet would have been much more interesting and fun to use.

Jet Squelcher is in a very weird spot for me specifically, because I despise short-range shooters with a burning passion due to their kits, paint, and times to splat, while I adore mid-range shooters for their speed and flexibility compared to other options with similar range. What of Jet Squelcher, then? Well, I have a love-hate relationship with the weapon. I hate it for its god awful kits and overbearing paint. But at the same time I love its flexibility compared to other backlines, trading burst firepower for no startup.

Jet Squelcher is a precarious weapon that needs to be handled with extreme caution. Get it wrong and you end up with the worst paint bot weapon in the game constantly spamming specials from the back line. Get it right, however, and you get an active anchor weapon that can lay down suppressing fire at a distance for teammates, using its special to push ahead.
Credit where credit is due, the developers did try with the Angle Shooter and Ink Vac kit, with the sub acting as a longer-range support Burst Bomb, the special acting as a sort of supportive Kraken or close-range Sting Ray. The problem is just that Dart is pathetically weak and Vac is an inherently flawed and terribly designed special.

If Jet Squelcher were to get a third kit that encouraged it to play closer to the front lines, with something like Ink Mine and Big Bubbler, then I feel like it would have a much healthier play style and be far more interesting for the game. And if they tone back its paint a little. Until then, it will remain nothing more than a stall-y backline paint bot with no sub. Or, in a word, a disappointment.

You’re talking about the vac kit. It was right there.
I can't believe I missed that man

Mine and bubble actually sounds pretty fun to play with mine as a combo tool to help with fights and locate enemies that are trying to flank your team and bubble as this supportive special that help enable your team to play more aggresively while keeping your main for fighting.

I actually did not realize that jet gotten a paint buff before posting this. I'm not exactly sure why it got one since jet paint before the buff wasn't all that bad before the change (From what I seen) so this buff was just strange.
