I think it had to do with the period's Japanese politics. ‘Taikun’ basically means “Great Lord”. Wouldn't someone introduced as the “Great Lord” a nation seem to be the supreme commander of that nation?
I vaguely remember something about a conflict between the Shogun and the Emperor back then.
