Now that the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct has come and gone, with many more coming, I will share my own thoughts on the announcements:

I really like what they have done with the Switch 2 features, the fact that the Joycon 2s are larger and use magnets rather than rails, this means that the physical part where they connect won't become too worn out. The mouse feature of the Joycon 2s actually opens up a lot of possibilities on what they can add later down the line, like the Nintendo Switch online having Wii games available. Oh, and they finally have native voice chat, which is great to see!

Mario Kart World lessening the use of menus to get from one track to another is a really cool touch, and I never would have imagined an open-world Mario Kart game.

A new 3D Donkey Kong game is great to see, the last one was released on the Nintendo 64, which was so long ago.

The fact that some performance-intensive 3rd party games are coming to the Switch 2 gives me hope that Nintendo will be able to release games that won't consume so much of the system's battery.

Game Cube games finally coming back? Heck yeah!

I am so glad that they haven't even shown a single thing for the next Splatoon game, showing even one screenshot would make players become impatient and would eventually rush the development team.

New features for Switch 1 games on the Switch 2? Now that's what I'm talking about!

Im personally really excited for the open world mario kart. the idea of practically always driving is really cool. This might slightly also help with chaos with the 24 ppl, though I'm unsure about that. Also it looked like they had costumes??? Farmer Luigi and like biker rosalina? That's awesome. The vc mechanic will be really helpful in general even if discord is still the main use of communication. Once I saw that S1 games were getting updated, I was praying that Splatoon 3 was one of them but no 😭. AND WIND WAKER IS COMING BACK OMGOMGOMGOGMGOMGOGMGOMGOGMGOGMGOMMGOGMOGMGOMG WW is my fav Zelda game by FAR. the music, the art, the gameplay, all peak and I haven't played it in so long it'll be nice to get that again.

One thing I really dislike is the NSO coming back. I just feel the paywall is unnecessary. If we were just given online with the switch, then you can buy NSO for better service and extra perks, then yeah that'd be ok, but having ALL of the online features locked behind this isn't my cup of tea to say the least.

And real quick can we talk about ELDEN RING coming to switch 2?!??!??! hecking ELDEN RING?! that's crazy!! High end PS5/PC game coming to a switch console?!

Overall though W direct, I think they did a great job and I don't think this will be another Wii U incident.

New Mario kart looks pretty fun! The freeroam aspect is a cool way to build the world and add a fresh twist to the game. It looks like it will have a large selection of characters, which makes a lot of sense given how up to 24 players can be in a race. I'm curious about what activities they'll have in free roam mode. Most likely time trials, but maybe missions can make a return too? Also the outfit feature from Tour is nice (Yoshi gets a little neck scarf in one of his fits and I love it!)

Built-in voice chat is nice. Some of the features like screen sharing look pretty choppy, but I like how some games like Mario party will also make use of the camera feature. Like most, I'll probably continue using discord, but I'd still love to try this feature out!

I also like that if you already own a switch 1 game with a switch 2 expansion, you have the option of getting an expansion pack. Hopefully the price won't be too high for these or anything, but it could bring some nice dlc opportunities for a lot of games. I also kind of expected Splat 3 to stay a S2 compatible title instead of getting an expansion since the game is pretty much wrapping up, but splatoon 4 will very likely be a S2 exclusive. On another note, hopefully the upgraded hardware helps S1 games like Pokemon SV run better!

GameCube games on NSO expansion pack might make me upgrade since I've been sticking with the base NSO subscription. It would give me a chance to try out Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness amongst other games. Still on the fence about it though. Also download play coming back is pretty unexpected!

Speaking of unexpected, we got a 3D donkey Kong game too? I haven't really played any DK games but it seems pretty neat, so I look forward to hearing more about it.

I really enjoyed the direct overall! Looks like lot of good titles are coming to switch 2. I would love to hear news about joycon drift being fixed, but that'll probably wait until release. I'll definitely drop in on the upcoming Mario kart direct, though!

Dude plenty of people that I'm sure are reading this can vouch, but I was in a voice call and POPPED OFF over the announcement of Air Riders. Deltarune, Street Fighter 6 compatibility, Colosseum/XD on NSO, and Silksong are all things I would look forward to in a vacuum among other things, but the existence of an Air Ride sequel completely stole the show for me. I don't even care that we know nothing about it because literally all they have to do is add new vehicles and a new City Trial map and I'm completely sold. Online support would be massive and I'm not insane for saying I'd be shocked if they didn't have it.

Otherwise, there is SO MUCH to talk about with Mario Kart 9. I don't want to take away from any other discussion about the direct so I'm going to make my own thread about it. I'm much more excited for it than I thought I would be.

I don't play very many games, but this direct rules even for someone like me. It's crazy we got this less than a week after another pretty good direct. The price point is kind of a bummer and a few things weren't super exciting but compare this to any other Direct and there was basically no part of it that felt like filler. I'm really excited for this console now, much more than I thought I'd be after today.

One thing I noticed is that there were no crossover characters in Mario Kart World, which was weird. Maybe they scrapped that idea idk. I was expecting them to add Octolings into this game. Maybe they'll just fill it with mario characters this time.

Also how am I gonna learn all the shortcuts for these tracks with all this walls jumping and driving off road 😭😭😭

Making mario kart open world would be insane. Maybe they knew everyone tried to drive onto the rock with the big waddling penguin on the Wii on N64 sherbet land and the big egg in the middle of Yoshi falls but failed every time. I remember doing that as a lil kid and trying to drive into the crowd on like every track until I hit the time limit and I came last 😭😭😭

I’m so excited for amiibo. There weren’t a lot announced but I really hope I can get some FF7 ones.

I hope the new Mario kart game isn’t too complex as driving off track can make you get lost fast.

Hopefully voice chat is just for friends because there are kids using the system.

New update: the prices.
Oh. my. god. What are these. 70-80 bucks for a game -_-. the switch itself is 450$ which is reasonable, but why are the games so much more 😭. the update packs are also pretty expensive being 10-20$, which for things like jamboree, yeah reasonable (again). But some others just seem too weak interms of what they add to be worth 20$.

Hiya! I just got done watching it :D

Here are my thoughts:
-First and foremost, I think the GameChat feature is cool, considering I don't use discord, or anything else that supports VC really T^T
-Mario Kart World seems AWESOME, I'm excited to actually play it and wander around taking pics with friends :3
-The lil' Basketball thingy was cool (sadly, I don't remember the name, nor do I feel like looking it up) dunno if I'll play it though, considering I don't have a completely clear surface just for a mouse, and I probably never will either <3
-The "Zelda Notes" also seem interesting. Again, I probably won't use it, but it's neat.
-I think I started crying when the Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild Main Theme started playing :P
-FF7, I'm coming for you <3
-I AM SO FREAKING EXCITED FOR DELTARUNE LIKE, I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE TO TOBY FOX RN
-Air Riders.... Y E S <3 (I have no words to describe this feeling... so... Y E S)

I'm glad they didn't say anything about Splatoon 4. It's not time for it yet (in my personal opinion, at least)

I'm not gonna get the camera that comes with it for a few reasons:
-Don't need it, I'm happy with just them hearing my voice and seeing my screen :3
-Honestly, it seems a little unnecessary in general, but don't let me influence whether you're getting it or not.

I sadly don't think I'll get Switch 2 until early next year, but to all of you who get it early, I hope you really enjoy it!!
Also don't think that when after I get it, I'm gonna spend extra money to get the "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition"

Jeez, I've been holding all this in my brain since I started watching it. Glad I remember enough to get my thoughts across.
Good day/afternoon/night to all of you <3

I was very excited for the Switch 2 Direct and despite not being able to give it my full attention as I was currently busy with other important things, I was still pretty satisfied with what they revealed.
The console itself is basically what I wanted from a Switch successor with the only other possible thing they could have added being a second screen for compatibility with DS games but considering the current price of the console, I understand why that didn't end up happening.

Most of the first-party games look really fun and I definitely didn't expect a 3D DK to ever happen even if there used to be plans for one.
Unfortunately, I don't think any of the games that were shown are enough to incentivize me to get a Switch 2.
Not that I wouldn't enjoy playing the new DK game or MKW but I was really hoping for a new 3D Mario instead. Maybe even something Smash related, though I'm not really sure what that would be.
Regardless, I'm expecting a lot more to be revealed later on anyway so maybe my feelings on this will change.

Out of all the reveals though, I think the addition of Gamecube games to NSO is what I care about the most.
I grew up with the Gamecube but I've always been worried about what would happen if my console just stopped working. I have a Wii but even that system has its own issues now (and I hate setting it up) so having this alternative way to play Gamecube games on a system I'll regularly be using anyway is going to be so nice and convenient.
It also helps that my library of GC titles isn't that impressive so there's still a lot I missed out on.
Only real disappointment is that I hate how slow Nintendo is with adding new retro games to their NSO service but the amount of content you get from GBA, N64, and GC titles should be more than enough to keep me occupied.

Random note here but they are NOT adding Melee to NSO.
I see some people talking about how cool it would be and they're right but if Nintendo wasn't willing to add Smash 64 to the Switch, I see no chance for Melee being picked.

The fact that some games (Jamboree I believe is confirmed) will have a card key rather than having the game in cartridge is especially scummy. I'm buying a Switch not a PS5 or XBox X. This makes me think this is why the storage space increased for the console.

Console is priced fine, although I'd prefer 399.99 but whatever.

$80 for Mario Kart because variable pricing according to Doug Bowser, who used to work for EA btw, is nonsense. It's $80 because "we think people will get a lot out of the game," they say. This coming from the same people who charge full price for ports outside of Metroid Prime among a very few others.
A tech demo that costs $10 when it should be included, saying that "Yeah we think this is worth $10." Astro Playroom for PS5 was a FREE full fledged game with achievements to showcase the DualSense, and that led to the success of Astro Bot for PS5. The people who worked on that tech demo will lose money guaranteed.

Reggie Fils-Aimé FOUGHT to have Wii Sports included in the US Switch and it has become such a beloved title even to this day. Iwata put his developers and others in the company before him when the Wii U tanked (sadly), calling himself a gamer who also is worried about the people who worked for him. There will never be a duo like them. This was the golden age of Nintendo and I will die arguing this.
On another note, Splatoons 2 and 3, despite having gradual QoL improvements over 1, never replicated the magic of S1. Now I know why: Iwata

Nintendo was a company who can put out underpowered product compared to Sony and Microsoft because for Nintendo it was the experience of the video game. It helped create lasting memories.

Nowadays? Nintendo said that they know most people can't afford a Switch 2, so they're making Switch 1 available still. In other words, womp womp. Unfortunately this I believe is the result of video games going mainstream.

All that said, Switch 2 will probably be the last video game console I'll ever get that's brand new.

Good:
  • Rhythm Heaven, that was last week's Direct but I'm still hyped for it
  • 120 fps screen and VRR support when docked (too bad no games will hit that lmao)
  • Ethernet port included in the dock
  • Deltarune is real
  • F-Zero GX
  • KIRBY AIR RIDE 2!!!!!
Maybe:
  • I skipped Kirby and the Forgotten Land because of how awful the framerate was in the demo. Keeping an eye on the Switch 2 version, if it's stable 60fps I'll finally pick it up.
  • Donkey Kong Bananza. Not gonna buy it for full price, but maybe on sale.
Bad:
  • $80 games. I don't care about Mario Kart anyway, and I only rarely buy mainstream games at full price, so it remains to be seen what else will be affected. But look, if I have to pay $80 for Kirby Air Ride 2, I will pay $80 for Kirby Air Ride 2. That is the game I will spend $80 on.
  • Hyrule Warriors is just BotW/TotK again. I loved that the first game celebrated every era of Zelda, go back to that please.
  • F-Zero GX is not a remaster, and now we know we won't get one. I assume netcode is delay-based just like N64, highly doubt they've got GC rollback.
  • Nintendo Puzzle Collection was nowhere to be seen in the GC trailer. C'mon, gimme.
  • Game Chat was a slideshow in the footage. Embarrassing. Good thing I have a capture card.
Questions I still have:
  • Performance on legacy titles that do not get explicitly patched. Since backwards compatibility is emulated rather than hardware level, I assume the console isn't just gonna downclock like N3DS did. But then if emulated BC can perform better out of the box, what are performance patches for?
  • JoyCon drift. They've said it's NOT Hall Effect, but haven't said what else, if anything, they are doing about it.
Insult personally addressed at me:
  • Sega continuing to desecrate Puyo Puyo's grave. Please stop, it's already dead. Just stop doing this to the game I loved, it hurts to watch. If you're never going to make a mainline game, I'd rather you leave the series alone entirely. Really I'm just pissed off that they're fracturing the playerbase yet again, Champions is still the only game on modern platforms that's properly faithful to original Tsu rules, but it's on life support because of Sega's poor decisions.
