i maintain that what i really want is for nintendo to start selling their OSTs in a more globally accessible way so that i can mix splatoon music with my non-splatoon music, but THAT BEING SAID, this is cool!!

(now add side order tracks. and post-release tracks in general. and the previous splatoon games. i need octo expansion music or i die)

The most insane part about this whole thing to me is that they're planning on adding new music through updates. I guess I can understand for some of the more recent games but why is something as iconic as the Super Mario 64 soundtrack not even on there?
They've been doing this same practice of "slowly adding content through updates" on so many of their services (early nso was a joke) and I hope it doesn't stick around for the entirety of Switch 2.

I don't think it's that big of a deal for this specific example but I'm extremely tired of this pattern.

I just don't understand why this has to be its own app rather than just releasing their stuff on Spotify or iTunes. It feels so passive-aggressively anti-consumer to me. Nintendo will always cry and send DMCA after DMCA to youtube channels that reupload their music and it's like...this won't be an issue if you just make the music easy to acquire. Capcom understands this. Sega undertands this. Hell, ****ing Square Enix understands this, and that's the same company that allowed Forspoken and Foamstars to be what they were.

People have been asking Nintendo to release their soundtracks and they listened, but they did it in the stingiest, most nintendo way possible, and I'm frankly really sick of it.

warning: rant

i'm just gonna say it: this is total bulls**t. i'm just gonna pirate Nintendo's music from now on. it's not that hard to just put official uploads of music to YouTube or Spotify or LITERALLY ANY MUSIC SHARING WEBSITE.
sorry, i'm just really pissed off about this. first they make an alarm clock that costs A HUNDRED F**KING DOLLARS, and now this?????? and about what Missingno said about Nintendo not crediting the composers of songs, i'm 99% sure that's illegal.
i'm extremely angry and disappointed with Nintendo right now. and i hate to say it, but they're only going to get more greedy from here on out.

It's work-for-hire that Nintendo owns all rights to and can do anything they want with. There's no law about how music files have to be tagged. Credits are a courtesy, not a law. In fact, it's frustratingly common in many industries for some things to go uncredited sometimes. At least we can still find the composers from game credits, the information is out there, it just would've been nice to have it tagged in the app properly.

It's not illegal, it's just wack.

ok so last night i was trying to curb how i felt about this because i didn't wanna be Nintendo Fan Who Just Complains About Everything, and maybe i was also a little bit in "ooh cool new toy" mode, but like. lots of really valid points being brought up here.

i maintain that the app in isolation is pretty cool - i like that they clearly know their audience with features like longer loops and the spoiler-avoidance settings. but like... there's no good reason we shouldn't just be able to listen to nintendo OSTs on services like spotify. (or if you're like me and you hate spotify/music streaming in general, buy them off itunes or bandcamp. the latter's a long shot but it'd make me specifically happy.)

i'd probably be fully on board if the nintendo music app was also a music store. or if it existed in conjunction with sales of digital albums and/or physical CDs that get released in the west please and thank you (even if that means without all the frills that splatune releases come with). but even then i realize that leaves people who stream music in the dust, because there's no way they'd have my fantasy version of the nintendo music app and put their music on spotify.

idk idk. cool idea on the surface, but that surface is a coating around typical nintendo greed

If only there was a way to put Nintendo music on Spotify or Apple Music but sadly streaming isn’t what is used to be. Which is my speculation to why the app is there.

What do you mean by this? Music streaming is in a pretty good place right now. Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music have pretty healthy competition and barely anything is exclusive to one platform like video streaming. Even without streaming, Nintendo can always put their music to purchase on iTunes. There's really no excuse for this besides wanting to keep you in their own ecosystem.

Pretty cool release from Nintendo. Definitely aligns with their goal of wanting to expand usage and appreciation of their intellectual property outside of just video games.

Not all music is available at launch because Nintendo wants you to keep opening the app every time a new soundtrack is released. Smart way to keep you engaging with the app, albeit somewhat annoying.

Putting aside the credits issue for a moment, I'm not sure how I feel about this app as a whole.

In a vacuum, the app itself is a nice value add for your NSO subscription. I like that they have both single-length and extended versions of each track, so you can loop them seamlessly without an intro/outro. Loopable OSTs can be hard to find sometimes, when I was trying to decide what BGM to use for a li'l video essay I recently put out I had to narrow it down to something I could find an extended version of.

But what's annoying is that this is the only official way to listen to Nintendo music. It's either this, unofficial rips on Youtube (and I would not be surprised if these start getting taken down), or the seven seas.

I just wanna buy an album and listen to it offline, DRM-free. I want to be able to shuffle these tracks in with the rest of my music library.

But that's been a problem since before the new app, so I can't really blame the app for this, can I?

I get the negativity about the halfway-ness of the app, but honestly, as just a perk for a subscription all of us already have for free with no ads and more content coming soon that we can look forward to, I'd rather just be happy then complain about it not being on Spotify.

I can, because they clearly know the demand people have for their soundtracks and they deliberately chose to not put it on the popular streaming services just to keep you in their ecosystem. I would be way less annoyed with this if they also included the option to use Spotify or iTunes, but they didn't and they won't.

I'd rather just be happy then complain about it not being on Spotify.
I can't in good faith settle for this. I guess this is coming from someone who's already pirated music and put it on my iTunes. The app isn't as convenient as pirating and having it on your regular music library. I don't want to hate the app, but I can't not see it for what it is.

If Nintendo did release Splatune on iTunes, I would delete my pirated music. I'm willing to consume the content in a legal way if there's an easy way to do it and this isn't an easy way.

I can be annoyed that this probably means they're going to take down music YouTube channels. It wouldn't be as much of a problem if they actually had all of the music on the app. But they don't.

I use Apple Music and I stream stuff too. Its just something from the artists. The app was likely a result of a deal being unable to be reached. Which is lame because I want 9-10-do music on Apple Music too. The music app is ok but can be annoying.
