but like... there's no good reason we shouldn't just be able to listen to nintendo OSTs on services like spotify. (or if you're like me and you hate spotify/music streaming in general, buy them off itunes or bandcamp. the latter's a long shot but it'd make me specifically happy.)
honestly I'm going to try and figure out a way to get the files from downloaded songs on the nintendo music app, and then download my songs from bandcamp, and put them both together in a separate music player (musicolet is a good one but idk if it exists outside of android)

idk idk. cool idea on the surface, but that surface is a coating around typical nintendo greed
They're using it to promote the NSO subscription. Would you rather have that or microtransactions? I know which one I prefer.

as in microtransactions… in the music app? or just in general? because if the music app microtransactions would be buying songs i guess that is what i’ve been asking for

idk man. back in gaming eras gone by we did have neither. you could just like, go online in a game that you paid for one time and got all the content for. maybe there’s some complicated economic reason that isn’t a thing anymore but it doesn’t mean it doesn’t suck

Releasing soundtracks shouldn't be a glorified advertisement for an online gaming subscription service.

I use Apple Music and I stream stuff too. Its just something from the artists. The app was likely a result of a deal being unable to be reached. Which is lame because I want 9-10-do music on Apple Music too. The music app is ok but can be annoying.
Capcom has their OSTs on iTunes/Spotify. Sega does too. So does Square Enix. And Activision. And Konami. And Microsoft. And id. And Sony. Even The Pokemon Company has some of their music too. Many indies also have soundtracks on streaming as well. Nintendo is the only one that's hoarding their music. If this is about a deal being unable to be reached, this is entirely on Nintendo's end.

Yes. I still have no idea why Ninten don’t just do this.

good luck, downloaded songs are protected the same way as streamed songs (widevine or fairplay protected videos)

After sifting through all the replies, I have to agree with the more upset people.
Like, why wouldn't they credit the composers!?!? Music is hard to make, and it's even harder to make people enjoy. All I'm saying is that they worked hard. And they're missing songs? When I first got the app, I was looking at all the songs and was pretty upset that not all of them were there. As I said before, MUSIC IS HARD!
And that the sole reason they are doing is to get more NSO subscriptions?
Nintendo. Please. Stop.

I love my nintendo composers, (TORU MINEGISHI AND KOJI KONDO TO BE EXACT!) Now I feel bad for them, working so hard, then not getting credit for their work.

I'm gonna go cry for everyone now. Bye!

If I had to guess, it's probably they just don't have metadata for it in a convenient format. The track info modal is likely going to have stuff like that added to it over time. I really don't think this is Nintendo being malicious or anything. Just they didn't have the metadata for it convenient and they didn't want to delay releasing it.

Same with missing songs, it's probably they just didn't have it in a convenient format at the moment. All the Splatoon 3 songs are from Splatune 3.

The app really feels like it was an MVP (minimum viable product), which is weird because there's evidence of it being in development for years.

ID3 tags have been a standard format since 1996. Nintendo definitely has them, many of these come from soundtracks that have been released in CD format with proper tags - including Splatune 3 (though they're tagged with the in-universe bands rather than IRL composers, but that's fine as long as they're tagged with something).

This is speculation but somehow ever since the fiasco with Nintendo and Phillips back in the day [with the Unholy Triforce], Nintendo really is too scared to do things normally. It’s why they don’t really want to work with anyone and always do their own thing.

I have been using Nintendo Music pretty consistently since its release. While the music selection is a bit sparse currently, I am excited to see how the catalog shapes up over the course of the next year. Really hoping we get the Splatoon 2 and Pikmin 3 soundtracks soon.
