i played sticks for all of s1 and s2, a good amount of that was on octobrush lmao which is imo the most sticks-friendly weapon but i did end up branching out to bucket/splatlings/chargers later. as someone whos played both i think motion is obviously better but sticks isnt nearly as bad as ppl say it is. if your goal is to get s+ with sticks its absolutely doable, i got quad x rank in s2 by basically only playing sticks bucket. the way your control scheme affects your aim/movement/etc is only part of your gameplay. if you know your weapon/its matchups well and have strong game sense you can run circles around ppl with sticks

i ended up switching to motion a couple months into s3 bc i felt like i hit a ceiling with my aim/movement and i was getting frustrated. especially on chargers i remember feeling like hitting shots was just luck. since then i feel ive improved a lot at the game in a bunch of different ways and i think playing motion was a huge help. when im learning a new weapon i no longer get the feeling of "am i playing poorly bc of sticks limitations". also my charger game is wayyyyy meaner

i think overall if you play sticks (esp if its not bc of disability but out of personal choice) you should just do whatever you want. if youre comfortable on sticks thats fine, dont switch to motion just bc ppl are telling you to. focus on your own gameplay and if you feel like youre hitting the aim/movement ceiling then you could consider switching

I physically cannot play motion. My hands are super shaky and I’m very nearsighted making tv usage terrible. I would love motion though.

you can use OBS to your computer which is a lot closer, and you only need to move the controller in very slight amounts. but if it'
s too much of a problem, use sticks.

It's been well understood for a very long time that analog sticks are terrible for aiming. It's just something consoles were stuck with for lack of better alternatives. Unfortunately, consoles were stuck with it for so long that by the time Splatoon showed up and finally offered an alternative, many gamers were too used to stick and resistant to change.

If a disability prevents you from using gyro, that's valid. If you're only playing casually and you don't care about trying to improve, that's valid too.

But too often I see players who seem to have an attitude about playing stick, that they're convinced it's just as good and they're gonna prove us all wrong with one screenshot of a sick K:D in Turf War once. Gyro objectively has a much higher ceiling, and if you want to get better at Splatoon, learn it. I don't care if change feels scary to you, improving at competitive games means stepping out of your comfort zone and breaking your existing habits to learn new skills.

If it sucks I did this with it
Well, let me answer your rhetorical question for you. TWO REASONS.
One, you’re using a weapon with a very large projectiles, which makes aim less important. (Of course there’s more to motion than aim.) So, you can still get kills well with sticks.
Second, rank matters. If this is below S rank then you can easily get that kind of game. Well, easily, no. But my point is that motion only becomes a necessity at S rank.
But if accessibility issues are the reason you use sticks, that’s perfectly reasonable. It’s just that motion IS objectively better.

don’t worry it’s not stupid, it’s not a term really used in-game! ‘sticks’ just refers to non-motion controls, the idea being you’re always using both controller sticks to move and aim.

motion, once you’ve learned it and assuming you’re able to use it, should be better for any weapon, but even if there was some edge case where sticks were best i’d still recommend sticking with one or the other just for the sake of muscle memory
ty:D!! idk i think im gonna try and learn motion just bc sticks is kinda slow imo even with max sensitivity:T

Just using motion controls can bump up your rank a ton. I was A rank with sticks, and after a while with motion I got up to S 400. Obviously I got better after time, aside from the motion controls, but motion really helps. It empowers you to hit more shots, move and shoot quicker, win more fights, win more matches… Ya.
PRAYING THIS WILL WORK FOR ME BC IM STILL STUCK AT A+ AND THEY WONT LET ME OUT

on top of what everyone else has already said, if i were to play with sticks i straight up would not be able to do the crazy motion flicks needed in order to play the decavitator. i need to be able to immediately react to where my opponents are relative to me and sometimes they try moving to a different place than i predict them to and need to readjust accordingly. motion is just way too slow for that even with a weapon where you don't need to be super precise with your aiming.
honestly might be why i cannot play decav or any splatana weapons at all. it always feels super slow when i try playing them but ig that could be sticks to blame

Bear in mind you will not immediately become better overnight. It's going to take time and practice to get used to something new. But if you put the time and practice in, it will pay off in the long run.

The argument isn't that sticks is just some fundamentally screwed up control scheme where you're completely unable to win every match. I think just saying that it's bad isn't very productive in a similar, even if not identical way to saying it's good is. The argument is that it's a handicap. That's all I'm trying to say. By using it you're going to be fighting to get onto something resembling even playing field with everyone else. If you were to get especially proficient, you would end up hitting a skill ceiling that's lower than what players with motion have. I couldn't tell you where that skill ceiling is, and it's definitely high enough for anyone using it to continue playing and learning the game for a long time.
tbh i always thought the opposite, like motion was the handicap bc of motion sickness or that its way too touchy to actually have good aim; i've been playing with it for literally just 2 days and it is so unbelievably fun and i've managed to adjust my eyes to it
atp i doubt that i'll want to go back and this thread is convincing me not to 🙏

this is how i feel currently.... like i use to be so much better with a charger (i absolutely was not a god at it but i was able to pull my weight w/ it) and just in general but i have made zero progress w/ ranked and i SUCK BAD at chargers altogether rn
obviously switching to motion and trying to play charger will still be super difficult but hopefully i'll improve my aim and be able to read movement better:3

i mean obviously yeah but at least i'll have more fun while i improve w/ motion
sticks is so aggravating to me rn it makes my movements feel super sluggish:/

tbh i think this goes both ways..... some ppl will hear that someone plays sticks and immediately be like "WHY ARENT YOU PLAYING MOTION!!!" i think ppl just need to like... not worry so much abt others' personal choices unless theyre actively asking for help lol
