They're probably gonna meme on us and make it 8-8-18 lol.
And this would be near the worst time for them to release it, for me. (but I can definitley see this happening =[ )
I'll get less than a month to enjoy online octolings before nintendo starts demanding protection money from me in september =/

It's Nintendo. You think they're not doing something? Well they've fooled you, because they're already doing it!

I don't know if anyone remembers, but their big annoucment at the Game Awards in 2013 was playable Cranky Kong.

I love Nintendo.

@Mar$el gg, you caught me at the worst time though. I was just trying out the Dapples in solo clams (yes I probably did sign a suicide note), and I thought I was going to get weenies to grind on.

But then I get instantly wiped out because I'm bad at dapples lol. ggs anyway

I'll hold the irrational hope that it'll come in june, or maybe early july. ._.
I'm going to take a wild guess and say July for several reasons. First, E3. Nintendo will most likely have their Treehouse livestream, and with 80 levels, I could totally see a few of them being introduced in the stream. The subway level selection, hub, all the new mechanics, it's all pretty technical stuff that will lend itself to the livestream. Also because early June is basically a death sentence for your game, especially when close to E3. Second, so it can launch simultaneously with the Pearl/Marina Amiibo that are due in July. Build that Splatoon hype to the max by selling us DLC AND action figures on the same day. Being a sucker, (A literal squid sucker, that is) I will buy both.

Eh, unless its a Amiibo Festival spinoff, I'll buy anything Splatoon that Nintendo throws at me.

Let's be honest though. 99% of people who are convinced they're not going to pay for online will still end up paying for it if some Splatoon update hits around that time. Most people will probably end up paying for it even if updates don't continue.

Dapple Dualies Nouveau are actually pretty good for CB IMO. Toxic Mist is good for defence, and Ink Storm is good for pushing.

Little adendum, but basically same for me

Except paid online.
I see that as a "Nintnedo f*** up" product, instead of a "Splatoon" product.

Aaaaaand there I go again x /
Splatoon is too good to give up over $20. (But if I was a Switch owner who didn't play Splatoon, I wouldn't pay it. BOTW, Odyssey, Xenoblade..these games hardly have enough online to warrant a paid service.)

Let's be honest though. 99% of people who are convinced they're not going to pay for online will still end up paying for it if some Splatoon update hits around that time. Most people will probably end up paying for it even if updates don't continue.
Well, that's unfortunate. It's sad to say people will buy it to buy it, without any real reason. Then again, there's millions of PSN users who pay for PS Plus. Sick burns aside, the Switch doesn't have the online games console average gamers are willing to pay for. The mainstream audience pays for Online on XBOX/PSN for Sports titles, shooters such as Battlefield and COD, streaming phenomenons like PUBG, etc.The Switch's library of mainstream heavy hitters are all-single player. Splatoon is the exception, it's the game that has to drive the entire online service. Mario Kart is big, but not anywhere near the level of Splatoon with online. As for Smash, it's yet to prove itself as a online game, so there's little expectations for how that'll turn out. The only other mainstream online Switch title I can think of is Rocket League, so there is that. We'll just have to wait for the fall and see what happens.
Sorry about another paid-online ramble, but this is seriously going to impact Splatoon 2's online, and it's going to be really interesting to see how this plays out this fall.
........but hey we did finally got Octolings. We do have that. And that's going to be great.

All I'm saying is that I think most people who say they're gonna give up Splatoon 2 for 20 bucks won't actually end up doing that, updates or no. People who post here generally have more than a passing interest in Splatoon, otherwise you wouldn't read and post in a Splatoon forum regularly.

I agree that not every Switch owner will get it. But most S2 players will.

And even then, you can pay month by month, so you can still cough up 3 bucks or whatever for one month and make the best out of that. And might I mention, once more, that we still don't know the perks of signing up for the online service.

People will likely pay to play Smash online, not to keep playing Sploon 2.

This is the biggest point. We can't be for or against a service when we don't know anything about it. I'm as dubious as anyone that Nintendo is going to use those subscriptions to give us anything worth more than what we've already gotten for free, but I don't KNOW that. I was dubious of the Switch before I saw the reveal video (just based on the rumors about it that were coming out)... and I was wrong.

Even being dubious, Nintendo has earned enough benefit of the doubt that we should withhold final judgment until we actually know the details of this service. Making proclamations about refusing to pay for the online service makes no sense at this point.

Insert here the Simpsons' "old man yells at clouds" memes.

You're still paying more for your own internet connection, as the game will more than likely remain peer 2 peer. We just get some retro games tacked on and game discounts to incetivize subscribers to buy more Nintendo games, all to disguise the fact you're paying extra to not be blocked off from the main feature of Splatoon2.

Anyone who has bothered to read posts from the people explaining why the paid online is a scam, knows it's a scam.
Where we differ seems to be whether to tolerate Nintendo pulling an underhanded price hike, or not.

I'm not going to try and fool myself,
90% or more of my switch online playtime is splatoon2.
Would I have really paid $80-$120 dollars (that's $60 + 1 to 3 years of subscription fees)just for the base game of splatoon2?

No.
Miss me with the sunk cost fallacy BS.

PS: @Spaceswitchmars agreed,
we don't know everything yet.

But the facts we have thus far, and the facts nintendo is intentionally withholding is very suspiscious and nearly damning on its own. My hopes are extremely low at this point.

Just because the sunk cost fallacy is a thing that doesn't mean that in every case it is...
@spaceswithmars Yeah, I'm not saying it will be anything spectacular. But saying right now that it will not be worth it in September is simply premature.
People will likely pay to play Smash online, not to keep playing Sploon 2.
Smash will surely be a popular online game, but Splatoon doesn't have couch multiplayer or a real focus on other offline modes. Not only that, but inevitably, Splatoon 3 will push Splatoon 2 out. So, I think there's more incentive for people to pay for S2 that Smash.

For sure, and this is why I'm dubious of their paid online. But I'm still going to wait until the details are official before I get mad. Nintendo has earned that much. For me, they've earned the benefit of the doubt that there's a CHANCE it's good even if they haven't earned the benefit of the doubt that it WILL be good.

Switch = $300
Splatoon 2 = $60
Electric bill = $nigh essential (I mean, you can live without electricity, you won't ;0 )
Internet bill = $see above
pro controller = $75
Octo expansion = $20

retro game switch expansion pack= $20
It's just 20 more, why not?

But I don't really care for buying switch retro games. I grew up playing nintendo, any retro games I'd care to play for nostalgia, I already own.
Well if you don't pay for the retro expansion, you can't use any of the the nintendo stuff you paid for, online. ;P;P;P

I dunno, seems pretty sunk cost fallacy to me =/

EDIT: And I forgot to even bring up all the hours we've spent playing splatoon.
Time is an investment, afterall.

No, it is very much not. Nintendo -does- not owe you one for playing this game for extended periods of time. That's crazy.

Listen, i know it ticks you off or whatever, but repeatedly moaning about the fact that it'll go paid and how much of a scam it is will not fix the issue. You'll only annoy people who are willing to pay to keep playing at this point, and no, stacking up a bunch of irrelevant costs does not count.

The only solace I have is that when September comes, some folks will leave and these complaints will finally STOP. Sheesh, GameFAQs is that-a-way if rampant negativity is what's wanted.

Well, if you're gonna count the 300 bucks the Switch costs as well, you might as well say Super Mario Odyssey was $360. And BotW was $360 as well. Games for high-end PCs are more than a thousand bucks by that logic.

They way I see it it's simple really. I can pay 20 bucks for a random game that lasts me about 10 hours. Or I can spend 20 bucks to continue playing one of my favorite games of all time for another year, lasting me, IDK, 100-200 hours?

Whether or not we had online play for free before or whether or not the other stuff Nintendo includes in the online thing is good or not all doesn't change that.

And yes, amount of playtime isn't everything, but you get the point.

Like I already said before, I'm open to not paying for it at all if come September I don't find myself playing Splatoon 2 anymore. As I'm sure most people would be (and why wouldn't they? you're not gonna pay for nothing). So why not just let it depend on whether or not you still want to play Splatoon 2 in September? What's the harm in being a little less stubborn about that?

Nintendo already told us they just want to see our wallets burn

Though now to be serious

First Waffles time is our investment in a product, if it is good we invest our time....if it isn't we don't. You can't be paid for time cause that is a a currency only you can spend

Second, I said this last time that they likely need to invest in better localized servers to support further online mulitplayer function and use in other games.
The best way to support this is paid online, but at moment they have very few IP's on the switch to support the online cause it could very well destroy the consumer support.

Nintendo is in a tight position which has resulted in this stall to make sure they have the hardware to support it and incentive to buy it without feeling threatened.
Likely they will stall again in the summer until the release of smash bros 5 and give more detail of a "release date soonafter"

You think I'm not sick and tired of droning on about paid online?
I have been
for a few months

Aaaaaand there I go again x /
Let's be honest though. 99% of people who are convinced they're not going to pay for online will still end up paying for it if some Splatoon update hits around that time. Blah blah blah look maw % signs, must be facts and totally not a fabricated opinion
so
stop
POKING ME
every
*******
time
I lightly mention it

Just-

Just ignore me when I mention paid online
It has been clear no one gives a dying rat's last **** about me leaving in september.
Let's just pretend I'm not. Lets pretend switch paid online doesn't exist, and never has. I want to enjoy splatoon 2 while I can, if it wasn't obvious enough by all my recent posts where I make no mention of nintendo playing off a bullshit charge as "special bonus", or my *** **** signature.

EDIT: In fact, don't even reply to this post if you agree with me to not talk about paid online here.
Just go on with the thread like this never even happened. Nothing would make me happier at this point in time.
