. Someone in another forum suggested that by this time, many casuals have moved on and there are mainly elite/ serious players left
Actually, there are still plenty of easy-goers left.

Try the C-People in Ranked and you will see what I mean.
So no, the casuals have not abandoned this boat yet.

I think most of them play exclusively with other casuals. As a casual myself, it's really annoying when you just want to have fun and unwind only to get paired up with MLG Pros who play in "S+ Clutch Mode" all the time. Better off finding a group that's for casual players and just playing with them, or at least a group of people who can wind down from competitive mode when they play certain squad members.

I've gotten paired against some face rollers, sometimes i do the face rolling. But don't lose face! you can only get better from that point onwards.

I can't do that since I'm in A- and won't get paired with them. I don't do squads too often. I believe you though. I remember being in C- and everything was pretty easy going. No rush to the objective or slaughtering left and right. Just learning what to do. It was nice. :) Once in awhile the other team in this rank or my own will kind of take it easier. We'll try to get and hold the objective, but not go after people and prefer deterring them by shooting at entry points. I'm not really elitist, but my personal goal is to at least get to high A+ one day. I'm not sure if I'm S material. That takes a lot of skill.

I didn't mean anything bad by putting in what another suggested. I just mentioned it as a possibility to the difficulty spike.

I don't get why people care about their ranks so much.
So it does go down, if you cannot handle the higher Ranks. What's the big deal?

it is supposed to match you with people close to your skills.
And that it does well. There is no other purpose to Ranks.

So if you are so scared of losing ranks, you might as well stop playing entirely.

simple. the american education system and the stigmas that surround it.
Or some people just have different personal goals when playing a game than others that has 0 to do with the education system. It has to do with a type of gamer mentality. Or if you're a completionist. That's looking too much into it. There's nothing wrong with rank goals just like there's nothing wrong with playing more casually, except this judgemental attitude that apparently comes included with latter's package.

The Asian education system too, as we have to take into account the fact that this game was made in Japan and played predominantly by Japanese people. They're more serious about ranks and social status than North Americans in oriental Asia--the standardized test was invented there, after all.

You see this obsession with statistics and ranks every time you see an Asian parent brag to other parents about their kid's grades, test scores, degrees, and annual income.

I think this thread is getting just a tad bit derailed.

Anyways, I actually had a good couple days of playing, so either I'm playing better or I'm having better luck with team compositions and stuff.

Yeah, I started the thread talking about Turf War... Rank was never an issue, if I drop Rank then I drop, no big deal. The only thing I don't like about rank is that losing is basically wasted time, which deters me from playing it. Even losing in Turf War I can manage to score 800-900pts playing defensively and trading ink while my team's getting stomped, so at least I get something.

This never had anything to do with Ranked but instead with what felt like a sudden difficulty spike in Turf War. I'm not unfamiliar with carrying the team but it just felt like someone flipped a switch and *bam!*

Nope.

I just can't figure out what happened all of the sudden - again, more confused than irritated since it happened so quickly and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong now; coupled with the fact that picking up new techniques and utilizing them on people who already know them is nigh impossible.

Rip friend, you'll be missed. But I've done a few turf war a little while ago, never really noticed anything different than when I started last month or so. But it may just be RNJesus looking out for me.

There needs to be matchmaking based on skill level for turf wars. Way too many times you'll be playing with a complete range of different skill levels and the only factor in victory is which team had more level 50s. It seems as if the only way to get a balanced match now is in ranked.

I keep getting totally thrashed by Japanese people in Turf Wars.

It probably doesn't help that I only play like once every three weeks, but I'm in no shape to ever go back to Ranked.

So! I took a 10 day hiatus from Splatoon and played some Hyrule Warriors. Picked it up last night because I really want to enjoy this game again and things, oddly enough, seem to have normalized. I was actually rockin' it out with the H-3 deco (of all things) and got to So Hawt for the first time this month! :D

Sure I got trampled a few times, but I didn't feel like I was consistently outclassed every single time and I almost always gave better than I got. Spent 2 hours trading blows with an E-litre user, it was awesome.

So there appears to be hope after all! YAY!

Interesting that I see this thread today... I took a like two-week hiatus from Splatoon due to time constraints and all, and tonight I came back to turf war, expecting to reach level 47, but nope... suddenly me and the rest of my teams are getting destroyed time and again, no matter which lobby I join. Really, wtf? Being a "semi-casual" player, so to say, this is kinda annoying and frustrating. I'm not a terrible player, not a pro either, but I just can't figure out what the hell is going on. Of course, having at least one disconnected member on my team every two matches or so doesn't help, but that's an entirely different topic...
In any case, I also feel like Turf has gotten a lot more aggressive. Sure, being level 46 I get paired with 50s and stuff like that, but I usually hold myself fine...? It's kinda weird and frustrating, I just want to level up, level my new gear, have some entertainment. If I want to get destroyed regularly, I can go play Ranked :/ (actually I don't believe your rank absolutely determines your skill, considering Turf War is the "main" way of playing this game - it just means that you're good at taking down people and surviving on your own while escorting something from place A to B or holding the line in a very enclosed space, all methods that have hardly anything to do with said "main" game style)
I also do have the feeling that players seem to concentrate on a small handful of weapons nowadays, which means that at some point or another, you will be put on a team with nothing but Chargers or facing a whole Charger team and things like that, making matches feel horribly unbalanced. I understand that it's probably impossible to team up people based on their weapons,but... I don't know, I feel like these walls of one or two types of weapons within one lobby have gotten a lot more recently.

@Lorbeerprinz, usually the agression level of the players depends on the map pool. When maps like Blackbelly Skatepark, Urchin Underpass and (to a lesser extent) Walleye Warehouse are on the rotation, some players aim to trap the opposite team near their spawn as the map makes it very easy to do. On larger maps like Hammerhead Bridge and Moray Towers the agression level is usually lower (or at least less frequent) since it's harder to trap a team (although Moray Towers is one of the worst maps to get spawntrapped in if it does happen )

Oh my god, this has totally happened to me after coming back from a brief hiatus in moving. I go in turf war lobby, and get paired with a bunch of 50's. I stood no chance. I manged a win, like every 10 rounds or so, and won the last one before I logged off, but it was just brutal.

The only reason I even stuck around aside from my despair was to hopefully improve, and maybe have some of that skill rub off on me. I', closer to 50 now, so maybe that has something to do with it.
