In an era of criticism and negative talk... It's time to ask "What do you think is underrated?". As Codney Dangerfield says "it gets no respect". It can be a weapon, sub or special or other game mechanic that is not appreciated as it should be.

The Triple Inkstrike is very underrated. It can break the armor of the Booyah Bomb user quite easily and also splat them. As someone who hates specials who make for easy escapes from being splatted, I love the Triple Inkstrike because it denies the Booyah Bomb users just that.

The intricate design of the Splatoon 3 tutorial skip. You'd say it's accessible for those who are familiar with Splatoon's controls, yet it also demands you figure out 3's wall-jump version of the Squid Roll. It even has some uninkable wall to Squid Surge past; none of the remaining single-player (except After Alterna) teaches you that's move's niche. It's pretty satisfying to see.

I'd definitely not call Tristrike underrated. Most top players have said it's one of the stronger specials in the game for a long time now and it's arguably in a better right now than it's ever been. It's a good way to deal with a lot of specials beyond Booyah Bomb like Big Bubbler and Crab Tank and adds to a team's painting by a lot, with the latter being especially important when so many team comps recently have wanted two mid-range weapons that usually struggle with putting paint down.

It should be a testament to how good it is that many top-level teams have been running Neo Splash instead of Splattershot despite Trizooka still being pretty stupid. A short-ranged Shooter is usually a team's primary means of having a good entry special because of how well they can paint and a lot of people have been opting away from what is objectively a better entry special in favor of what Triple Inkstrike can do. People are also at the point where they're saying it's a good special for Slosher despite everyone who played it a year ago saying that the synergy is horrible just because it's Tristrike. You can manage poor synergy if the parts are all strong by themselves.

For my response to the thread's question, this much is a matter of a personal viewpoint but I don't really see anything in this game as underrated from a balance standpoint. I dunno, I'm just not playing the same game that top level players are. I don't have nearly the same ideas of how teamwork and mechanical consistency are at a top level and there are a lot of weapons that I don't play well against but wouldn't call underrated. The way I look at the game is "this is what top level players think, let's see how much of it can I apply to the level I'm at and let's see what just doesn't translate." I can think Squiffer is a very strong weapon that's annoying to deal with at my level but don't know what keeps people from playing it at top level and what kind of tournament results someone would get if they were super proficient with the weapon.

Big Swig Roller is hugely underrated as a main weapon. While it doesn't technically have a close-range one-shot, it can very easily combo a horizontal flick with its roll for a consistent melee splat. It has far more range and a much more consistent two-shot than any other roller, and on top of that it's still a Big Swig Roller with insane paint and object damage.

The only thing holding back Swig is its two mediocre kits, not that there isn't synergy with the Express kit. It's far better than top players' tier lists would lead you to believe.

The question is, underrated by who? The general splatoon playerbase or the competitive community? Cephalobro's comment and your response show that these have very different answers.

Ink recovery up
A lot of people discard this ability in favor for other ink management perks but on some weapons I think its really REALLY good
the main weapons I think are good with it are chargers which lack white ink frames and a little dip into the ink in between shots can give you a lot of ink back if you use a main of the perk

another thing its nice for is splatlings with bombs and other throwable subs (both edits, both minis, vhydra, BP, Dheavy and both nauts) because normally when you throw a bomb you need to get a bit more ink to be comfortable spinning up and ink recovery helps a ton with that downtime letting you use your sub weapon much more often then you might be used to on a splatling

I think it kind of has to be a large portion of both playerbases. If top players dismissed Kraken as a gimmick at first and everyone else said it broke certain modes, then it's harder to argue it's an underrated special because the majority said it was strong. If a boatload of top players say Stamper is strong but it takes a while for everyone else to catch on then it's not as hard, but still hard to say Stamper is underrated in that case. Meanwhile, the Ink Recovery Up post here for example would be perfectly suited for this thread because top player consensus is that it's the worst ability that isn't main-only and most other people never talk about it either.
