What if every special had a mid-jump version?

We all love the concept of Splashdown, regardless of how we feel about its implementation in game, and Triple Splashdown added some extra nuance and strategy to its use by making the super-jump version act like the old one. That got me thinking, what if every special acted different when used during a jump? So I came up with a few:

  • Tacticooler drops a soda onto anyone the user passes directly over during the jump, but it doesn't place the cooler afterwards
  • Super chumps works pretty much the same except your own landing is randomly swapped with one of the chumps'
  • Trizooka causes you to do 3 TF2-Style rocket jumps immediately after landing as you fire it straight down, but you can control which direction you get launched
  • Reefslider explodes on impact with the ground, flinging you backward about half the distance it would have traveled normally
What do you think about these, and can you think of variations for other specials? Or is the whole concept silly and should be reserved as Splashdown's own unique thing?

Hmm, Nintendo seems to be very against people accessing the opponent's side of the map, so I think all of these would need to make sure the player doesn't deviate from the original landing position.
Tristrike could be interesting if it threw all 3 at the same time, so they would land in sync 🤔

Yeah, that makes sense. The chumps idea would be easy to fudge in such a way to prevent that, and since the reef idea always knocks you backwards it shouldn't be a problem, but the zooka idea would be a bit of a problem for that, so maybe the final blast always sends you back to the actual jump spot? or maybe it just does that if you move too far forward?

Oh yeah, that would be great. You can kinda make 3 strikes land in sync normally, but that's a bit tricky.

Ultra Stamp could maybe do its jump swing upon landing if activated mid-jump, could maybe catch a short-range weapon camping your jump off-guard

Big Bubbler could maybe activate on your set landing point, perhaps protecting it from more long-range threats

I'm wondering what Kraken should get... Maybe it takes no knockback for a bit once it lands!

And Screen could just make a big circular screen erupt around you that DOES do the 30 damage and paints, but the screen itself doesn't last very long.
