Has a thread like this been done before? Maybe. I don't remember.

Simpler thread, but gamer tags usually have some attachment, or at the very least some kind of interesting backstory behind them. What made you choose the username that you did when signing up for this website?

Mine's got a longer story. For context, prior to what I will tell, I used Terrific Torterra on Pokemon Showdown. On Mario Maker 2, I had to register a name for online, and my usual name StormSurge which I had used up to then was taken. Since the character limit was 10, and I didn't feel like using numbers in place of the letters, I went with a shorter spin off of my Showdown name. I used the name of my first ever Pokemon, Snivy, and then an adjective before it, and I went with Sly, cause I found it cool. As time went on the Sly portion took on a double meaning as I became a fan of Hollow Knight, with Sly being a favorite character of mine, along with the charm he gives you. Because of all of that combined, it's remained a strong name choice, and usually isn't taken, a problem I had encountered a lot before.

Mine is TwoBadNeighbors, or TwoBad (depending on character limit, and how I feel). It's from the Simpsons episode where George Bush and Homer become neighbors and start fighting. Very good episode.

i wrote this a lil' back to answer this very question!

i have an odd username story.
a long time ago, around 1st–2nd grade, i was playing mc at a friend's house. their parents did computer-y work (which involved computers,) so there were 2 pc's: enough for 2 people. when joining through the computer, you could choose your name, and somehow, i picked "Adphee".
that, however, would be irrelevant, as my first real username was "dErPy_KiRbY", after my derpy attempts to draw kirby ;-; i later switched to "dErP_kErB" (the case symmetry is simply more pleasing.) i used it for a long while, but eventually, i found it was taken on certain platforms (namely gmail.)
meanwhile, "Adphee" had maintained some underground usage: as my password (i deleted the email tho, so good luck hacking into stuff ;-) since no website allows for 6 character passwords, i had to make some adjustments, which led to the addition of "XD". like the root-name, i have no idea where "XD" comes from besides sounding cool, but it sorta stuck.
because i hated compromising my username on gmail, i rebranded as "AdpheeXD"; shortly after, i stumbled across splatoon 3. 2 had fascinated me enough a while back, but all the hype over 3 had me hooked. i certainly wouldn't game as "Player", so i had to pick a name.
now im not your average person, willing to accept a normal, legible name. no, i needed S¥ʍßøLs. every single letter of my name (barring H and d) became a symbol [note: H is capitalized because it led to pH, which i thought was cool.] i even changed "XD" to "Ω²".
[side note: although i simplified my ign, i always kept the "Λ". i love that specific character because of mariokart wii, which uses it over a standard capital A. i remember discussing it with my mom, and at the end of the conversation, i was left thinking "that's a really cool thing." anywho...]
having all the symbols was a bit much :/ yet i couldnt let go of one specific character: "æ". this, along with my newly needed discord reset (like i said, i deleted the old email,) led to some experimentation. thus, æ became part of my official name. ironically, æ changes the pronunciation. most people read "Adphæe" as "add+fae", despite æ being pronounced as "ee". nonetheless, the pronounciation stuck, so now im Adphæe. my username has become such a big part of me: so much so i mentally call myself it over my irl name XD
so... that's me ig

i remember a similar thread from this before, lol. here's me copy-pasting the explanation from there:

it turns out a lot of my naming history has just come from me making random sounds until something sounds good. i'm one of them unrestricted internet access kids so i have a very long history of usernames but i'll just skip to the point where "neon" was actually involved

my first iteration of this was "neonriver". i chose to have neon initially because i was really into vaporwave at the time, and river was a name i went by in real life around my friends
then one day i decided to change my nickname on my switch for, as far as i remember, literally no reason (i guess i was bored????) and i did the old "making random sounds trick and decided "paintedneon" sounded nice! except that was one more than the 10 character limit, so i removed the e in painted to create "paintdneon". that name actually ended up sticking the longest, but there were a few problems with it, like people calling me "paint" even though i preferred neon, people not realizing paintd was misspelled, or on the opposite end, people thinking my name was pronounced "paint d neon"
so i eventually ended up changing it to just neonlights, which is what i'm still called in a few places. the screen part is really just tacked on because of my interest in tech (and also because "neonscreenlight" is much more likely to not be taken on a social media website than just "neonlights"

There isn't much history behind my name, but a while back I would usually just name myself Mario or supermario1046 because of my huge interest in Mario and because 1046 was a nice number (I had very creative mind for names.) I even used it as my username on my Wii U. Later I joined a robotics club in middle school and began gaining an interest in technology, which would influence my name choice a bit later on. When I started playing splatoon 2 I felt it was a bit boring to keep going by "Mario," so I decided to think of a new username. I wanted something tech related, so I just started thinking of all the tech terms I could: digital, robot, technology, bit, byte, etc. Then I just put things together until I found something I liked. Digitech, Terabyte, Tetrabyte, Technobyte... perfect! It's pretty simple, but I still like it to this day!

Glad I didn't choose Tetrabyte, or I'd have to learn tetra dualies... /j

i told this story before but now i’m gonna tell it in bullet points. for… some factor. it’s not cool factor. but it’s something
  • at 14 i wanted a ‘default’ username i could make into my BRAND when my, um, overly ambitious sims 2 machinimas i was totally gonna make took off and i became an internet sensation
  • earlier that year i’d finally settled on the name ‘clover’ just like, for myself, as a Name
  • i thought “well four leaf clovers are lucky but seven is a Lucky Number so i could be SUPER LUCKY if i called myself SEVEN leaf clover”. i thought i was really clever for this
  • the url was already taken on tumblr. somebody else was clever before me. i was not deterred
  • eventually i started to feel like the full “sevenleafclover” was too clunky. like, that’s a mouthful. so i started dropping ‘clover’ from it and found just “sevenleaf” rolled off the tongue more smoothly
  • this was also often taken but usually by irrelevant or empty accounts. so that was fine. if necessary i use “sevenleaving” when sevenleaf is taken
  • i’ve long abandoned my ‘sims 2 machinimas with full voice acting and custom composed opening and ending themes for every episode’ ambitions but the name i picked specifically for that stuck as my general username

Was the originally the name of my OC that I later adapted as my tag. I named her based on the Akira Toriyama method of naming a character after food and slightly changing the spelling. One of my favorite foods is sushi, so change the second "sh" sound to a "ch" sound, and the rest is history.

"I guess you might say he's barking up the wrong Bush! Heheheheh."
There it is Homer. The cleverest thing you'll ever say and nobody heard it.
"D'OH!"

I came up with this name once little kid me graduated from Deviantart jail and decided to move onto the much nicer and definitely less problematic Amino :DDDD
More specifically I moved to Pokemon Amino, which made me think that I should have a Pokemon-themed nickname as well as opposed to my much more general name of the past. Quagsire was and still is my favorite Pokemon of all time, so obviously it had to be part of the name.
The latter half of QuagSass just came from how people tended to describe me. Didn't really agree with the descriptor myself at the time, but it rolled off the tongue nicely so I decided to just fake it till I make it.

When I came up with the name, I didn't think I'd ever drift away from the Pokemon franchise. It was such a big part of my life. Now though, Pokemon just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Been thinking of potentially dropping this name as well and slowly transition to a different one that I've been using in my professional life. But we'll see.
