i’ve been trying to learn guitar for… most of my life. i’m not good at Sticking With Things, but i always remember, like, how to play a guitar, in theory. so every few years i pick my guitar up again and try to rebuild the actual skill. i was more dedicated to it in high school, when my dad (who also plays guitar) was paying for my sessions with a guitar teacher and i was taking assorted music classes in school, but i’ve fallen off since then

i have a loose goal this year to make some music, even if it’s, like, three bad demos. we’ll see how that goes. it’s already february

Played the drums through high school and even got a smaller award for it, but haven't had much opportunity to play since then. I'm not a part of any bands, never owned a non-electric drum kit and frankly there are better drummers than me out there.

⬅ (assigned horn player at middle school band instrument select) No one else wanted to do it. I didn't even want to do it; my childhood dream was playing the cornet (trumpet's weird little sibling). I supposedly had the most raw natural talent my band director ever saw in his thirty years of directing middle school students... and zero interest in the instrument itself, so I put in the bare minimum effort and yielded unimpressive results.

Last year, I bought a $50 cornet from an enthusiast (I think he may have also been a band director?) on Craigslist. Intermediate instrument, so she could grow alongside me instead of holding me back like a beginner grade instrument. A little dinged up, but functional and then some. (It gives her personality.) Best $50 I could have spent if my orthodontic work in high school didn't permanently alter my embouchure. Or if I didn't work such weird hours. I should stop making excuses someday and start practicing again. I read while I was doing my research that a cornet has a warm, mellow tone my source compared to the human voice. That aspect in particular fascinates me; I couldn't carry a tune in my Tri-Slosher if it saved my life.

From time to time, I think of picking up a guitar and just learn enough to play my favorite songs with it.

When I was a kid, my parents sent me off to various afterschool activities and one of them was playing the recorder (kind of like a smaller flute). It wasn’t my super favourite thing until we switched to going to a music school and I got this awesome teacher which made the class feel like a chill hangout spot XD. She always brought snacks and was like “Hey, practise at home and if you don’t understand something let me know” and when I didn’t she explained it using simple terms and very effective techniques. (I think she was also part of the national orchestra of Ukraine which was awesome)

I also tried guitar, but my fingers said no after a while.

waaaah you're making me remember my high school chorus teacher who similarly made class feel like a hangout. i miss her 💔 like she knew when to put her foot down and make us practice but she was very compassionate and chill. she very clearly cared about us and our potential as singers and wanted to help us shine (as opposed to it being about her ability to corral us, as was kinda the vibe with the middle school chorus teacher). she didn't bring snacks but she did let me & several other students eat lunch in the chorus room

(oh yeah i sing too. does that count as Instruments)

sign me up. I'm putting sitar and ondes martenot in your music tho.
you are exactly what my chiptune emo project needs

Dude, that teacher LITERALLY had a student whose mom was like "Please, help her. She is very antisocial and I'm worried about her and no psychologist we tried could help her" and after about 2 years that student was a completely different person and was also very good at playing the recorder as well. She was literally like a saint XD

I played cello in my school's orchestra, but ever since leaving, I've been slacking off and haven't played it that much.
Currently, I focus more on piano than cello, but they're equally great instruments.

I lied.
I named my cello big mama and now I have an emotional attachment to it.

I played some really basic piano when I was a kid but that's about it. I couldn't tell you how to play anything but every time I find a piano my hands just move automatically to play the songs that I used to play years ago. Really weird how long that muscle memory sticks around even when it goes completely unused for that long.

I have played violin or viola... I'll just say since I was very young, and I never stopped. I've recently tried learning piano and guitar but never got far with either due to lack of interest (i still haven't figured out how to go about tuning my guitar to 15edo) or just not having enough time for that and viola and everything else. I've been in orchestra for as long as I've been in a school with one (i wanna say i always will be but that's not happening 💔) so yeah. music is cool. Haven't had much opportunity to do microtonal stuff but that'll change eventually.

Oh and I've been making some music in Sky if it's relevant. Not sure how much it counts for but it's a nice opportunity for me to get the music out of my head without getting out an entire viola. (clarification: it is still in my head and I would not have it any other way. it is just also somewhere else.)

also alto clef is the best clef because middle C is in the MIDDLE and you cannot convince me otherwise

yall should quit your jobs and jump on my chiptune emo project
yesyesyes I know what exactly 10 of those words mean but if it's music related I'm in. I wanna Make Something.
