Hey everybody!

If you are at all interested in Splatoon tournaments or growing the Splatoon community, please read this post. We are trying to get Nintendo to add a spectator mode and LAN support to Splatoon, and we need as much of the community to help us as possible.

Why is LAN necessary? At the moment, in order to have a single match for a Splatoon tournament when custom lobbies are available in August, you would need 8 Wii Us connected to the venue’s internet in order to have two teams play. The internet at the venue would have to be spectacular in order for the game to run without hiccups. This effect would be significantly worse if a venue had multiple setups. This game is so unique, fun to play, and great for spectators, and so it only makes sense that Splatoon can be very big. However, the lack of LAN support can severely hurt the community’s growth, as it adds yet another barrier that venues will have to face in order to host tournaments. A game store or hotel internet can only take so much.

Why do we need Spectator mode? In order to be able to stream a view from each player in a match, a streamer would currently need to have each Wi U equipped with a capture card. Assuming you’re paying approximately $150 per capture card, that comes to a total of $1200, and that’s a lot of money. Very few people will be able to stream Splatoon tournaments with much quality, severely limiting the amount of new people we can attract to the community. Online tournaments are not currently capable of being streamed at all.

With both LAN support and a Spectator mode, being so important to allow Splatoon to have a healthy and long-living community, we ask that everyone please help out. This game is so unique and fun that it deserves to be at the top with all the other big names. They want this game to last long as well, so if enough people ask they will listen to us. Get out there and support this game and add another Nintendo game to the big times.

Here’s how you can help:

Thanks so much! while liking and signing is great, the real meat of it that will get Nintendo's attention is sending them messages through twitter, miiverse, etc., so if you're comfortable doing that, it would be so awesome!

Do you think the modding community could potentially help in adding a LAN mode?

No. There's very little anyone can do with a wii u in terms of modding right now

So without Lan this game is pretty much going to die in 5-6 years when Nintendo shuts down online for it. What about having dedicated servers? Is that a possibility?

Well without LAN and Spectator mode you can't even have a healthy competitive scene which means it'd last much less than that :( and it's so unique for the shooter genre that'd be such a shame. Not sure about the dedicated servers, but that took a lot of effort for brawl and mario kart wii

Hey everybody its only been 8 hours and

Everybody keep it up! Spread the word! Miiverse and Twitter will be the most important thing, and support each other's miiverse posts (post them here if you like). Ask your Splatoon streamers to talk about it.

How about a change.org petition or kickstarter? Just a thought
We actually do have a change.org petition which has an amazing 45 supports, but considering that Nintendo will probably watch Miiverse and Twitter that is huge for us.

Not sure if kickstarter will be good, but we still love new ideas! Because sometimes there are ideas we haven't come up with, which would be amazing!

That's one thing I thought about for a long time already. Even if it's far in the future, it will eventually happen and then it's the end of Splatoon as the game is heavily dependent on its online mode. A successor might be out at that time, but everyone knows the successor doesn't necessariliy have to be the better game... LAN would help here a bit, but custom servers like they were set up in Mario Kart Wii will be the only real solution if you want to keep playing with friends regularly.

I'm not sure about spectator mode. It's a nice to have, don't get me wrong, but in Mario Kart we get bigger stuff like the current World Cup reasonably well done with streams from players. I'm not familiar with other shooters and spectation possibilites they give you there, though, so don't judge me too hard on that opinion^^"

Anyway, btt - I'm going to participate via change.org and maybe write a short e-mail to Nintendo.
