Start from materials covered by the JLPT/NLPT 5 and move from there.

Saw this thread and was looking to see if anyone mentioned renshuu.

I tried to take lessons back when I was in high school for no other reason than because the sequel to my favorite game didn't get translated. Didn't get all that far in it though because I had too much actual schoolwork to keep up with.

Found renshuu a few months ago and decided to try it for funsies, been having a lot of fun relearning now. Also wanna recommend Tadoku for a great collection of free books at varying difficulty levels.

After finishing all of renshuu's N5 material, I looked for a JLPT practice test online. Felt like I only half understood half the questions, and on section 2 I ran out of time and had to put random guesses down on the last three questions. By the end of it my brain was feeling so fried I could barely keep up with the listening portion. But I managed to pass with a 122, and was surprised to find out the pass line is just 80. We take those.

I don't think I'll try to take the test for real until I'm at least N3 level. But that feels like a good goal I wanna aim for someday.

As soon as I realized they let you change your friend code, I immediately changed it to をををを for sillies but then i remembered this
i wonder if my randomly-generated string of kana means anything. probably not. hopefully not?
and realized that four of the same character is much more likely to mean something than four random characters. but I couldn't remember what it was before to change it back. so now it's みづやみ because it sounds nice (and because づ is cool)

also, I really love that by nature of being hiragana, the codes are pronounceable. I was able to remember sevenleaf's 30 minutes later after reading it like twice. Imagine doing that with a string of 12 numbers.

Didn't even realize friend codes were a thing. やふおら if anyone wants to add me, though idk what friend lists even do here.
we can play private shiritori :)

(your vocab is probably way more advanced than mine. maybe we shouldn’t do that for a while. lol)

like in general? or specifically on renshuu?

if the latter, there’s two different shiritori minigames on renshuu actually. “shiritori cat” is timed and against bots, and plain “shiritori” is just like, asynchronous group shiritori. anyone can hop on and continue the chain off the last word played, and you can come and go at your leisure. (if the former, the minigames give a pretty good rundown of the rules :D)

i think u can see each other's kao from adventure mode if you are friends?
my friend code is よけうと (my username is chooseanickname bc it said "choose a nickname" in the box so i was like "ok, guess that's what should be in this box")

lots of folks introduced themselves in japanese for practice there which i think is fun. i talk too much so y’all know me already, but:
こんにちは!僕の名前はクローバーです。二十四歳です。十年間日本語を勉強しています。よろしくお願いします!

(i’m not sure how i wanna translate ‘sevenleaf’ - straight katakana transliteration like セヴェンリーフ? translate one or both words in there to japanese? just keep it as is?? that last one wouldn’t be good practice though - so i just used my ‘real’ name lol)
(also i'm not great at transliteration so for a minute i thought sevenleaf's name was "crowbar")

i should make that my derby name. folks could call me “crow” for short.

quick dictionary searches tell me that crowbar in japanese, when not just a japanese non-loanword word, is バール. if i was a roller derby player in japan 「クローバール」 would kinda go hard as a name actually

did leaf REALLY manage to bring up derby in the japanese learners’ thread…?

i used to use duolingo but the streaks system gave me massive burnout, maybe ill try renshuu
for now, i know very basic grammar, a tiny bit of hiragana, intermediate katakana and intermediate transliteration into katakana
