I honestly miss Splashdown the way it was back in 2. Call me crazy but the visual and sound design was peak, and the speed of it let you just add it in as something to combo off of in fights. Vanilla Inkbrush with splat bomb splashdown my beloved I miss you :'))

I want Bubble Blower back, we have like 5 specials in 3 that just do "PAINT AND DAMAGE" but Big Bubbler is basically the only defensive special (Unless you count Chumps acting as cover ig). Defensive specials are just generally underrated across the whole series but Bubble Blower is probably the most interesting out of the few we have.

I miss when Grizzco stuff was actually free and we didn't have to grind for them.

I also miss the unique hub animations each character type had, Splatoon 3 lacks that, which is a big shame.

I miss losing animations. 1 had it too. But seeing the losing animation made me tell my Inkling "Hey, we'll do better next time" or "I'm sorry buddy! We'll win next time!" 🥺

With 3, you just have to go through the enemy team taunting you. And you can't speed that part up. Dev team is like: look at all these animations we made while the audience is like look at all these ways the enemy team is rubbing it in.

Yeah, it seems like they just got rid of any animation that's not an Inkling Girl animation too. A good look at the animations of either Inkopolis hubs is evidence enough. And both of the weapon emotes mimicking the ones from the previous games? Both Inkling Girl biases.

AHHHHH YES! That is exactly my thought!! I know some people are in the opposite camp, where they are glad that losing animations are gone since they don’t want to see their inkling/Octoling sad. I believe that when the losing animation plays, you are kind of saying to your inkling “Hey, that’s okay. We’ll do better next time” like you said. Also the taunting does get annoying. Especially when it was an unfair match.

But speaking of splatoon 2 nostalgia, I remember playing the story mode on a day-camp bus and trying to beat all levels with each of the weapons to see if it unlocks any additional dialogue with Marie since I just wanted to hear her XD

Another charming thing, Agent 4 had varying stage-clearing animations depending if they were male or female.

You know what else I miss? The Hero Shot. It's a P90! It's probably the only weapon in the whole franchise that's based on a real gun and I LOVE that.

Also one more thing. It's weird but I love how the Blaster "bullets" look in S2. It was like a ring of energy you fire and I thought that was cool.

I don't really mind seeing the other teams' winning animations, but I found it funny how for the first time the losing music doesnt actually sound very sad and you don't see your player character sad either. I dunno if they thought it frustrated players too much lmao

On another note, the nostalgia I have for Octo Expansion is INCREDIBLE. I was supposed to be doing math homework when I saw the nintendo direct that announced it and screamed so loud my dad became concerned (I did the same with the announcement of Splatoon 3). While I don't have nostalgia for that time of my life, playing through and beating octo expansion, reading all the memcakes, listening to the music, was incredibly impactful to me. Changed my brain chemistry I think; now I'm obsessed with metros and light rail. I miss how 8's personality was so visible through the memcakes, how Pearl and Marina's relationship was developed and shown, and how by playing you would get so attached to this little octoling with dreams of the surface.

I definitely think that in many respects, Splatoon 3 is a better game, but I feel like a lot of the characters just weren't shown off so much, so you wouldn't get attached to them. Maybe I'm just not that into Deep Cut, but Pearl and Marina and Eight will probably be my favorite splatoon characters for a long, long time. (hell, I even feel more attached to Four than Neo Agent 3! and Four's campaign was kinda mid, especially compared to Alterna!)

Splatoon 2 came out towards the end of my time in college. My friends and I were very excited because we played a ton of Splatoon 1 on Wii U. We all got it on launch day and hung out after work to play it together.

Lots of good memories playing it with my friends, we used to all hang out for Splatfest and pile into my bedroom to play as a team near the router. We kept playing pretty actively until around 2020, at which point my friends had lost most of their interest. They didn't really get into Splatoon 3 (though they bought it launch day lol). Oddly enough, they've recently started getting back into Splatoon 3 though, so now we're starting to play together again.

Comparing Splatoon 2 to Splatoon 3, I do find that Splatoon 2 feels more polished than 3 and had a less tumultuous update cycle. Part of that is probably because Splatoon 3's development was interrupted by a well-known worldwide event, but it has recovered to a small extent. One thing I will always like better about Splatoon 2 though is how 2 continued the weekly content releases from 1. I can't stand the seasonal drop method Splatoon 3 uses. Weekly content drops gave my friends and I a reason to hop on at least once a week.

Overall though, I think Splatoon 2 is where the series peaked, including in sales. Of course, that's just my opinion. You could make a case for any of the games.

While there are some things I don't really like about splatoon 2 *cough* ink armor *cough* one thing I absolutely love and still love to this day is shifty stations

Usually with stages there are some gimmicks that can't be added for one reason or another like the cannon for example so it's great to see what would happen if there was just no boundaries . Some of them I can think of from the top of my head
like the one with the grind rails.
The closing off certain parts of the stage after certain time
The one with the flooders.
The one with the tentacles you needed to destroy to access parts of the map.
And who can forget the pearl killer wail that was just so hype

I like the splatoon 2 splatfest more for this reason. of course there is the idea that I just gotten older and more bitter
Tri-color just doesn't really do it for me

I really miss Shifty Stations from Splatoon 2 Splatfests. Every new one felt like a fresh experience with unique mechanics like grind rails and tentacle objectives. They made every event feel special.

Ink Armor was frustrating to fight against, but it added a different dynamic to team play compared to how support specials work in Splatoon 3. Bubble Blower was also one of the most creative specials, and I wish something similar existed now.

Splatoon 3 has its strengths, but it feels like it lost some of the personality from 2. The losing animations, the lively hub world, and even the way weapons sounded and looked all made the game feel more immersive.

Thanks for making this thread active again!

I will agree with the Shifty Station love. I guess in a way their spiritual successor was challenges with the Gushers being the closest comparison, but the Shifty Stations have the benefit that the whole stage can be designed around the gimmick. My favorite is the glass Thunderdome one where you can capture turf permanently by winning the fight inside.

The main thing I come back to the game for is playing Hide and Seek with my friends that only have 2. I have to admit, the maps in Splatoon 2 are much better for doing that anyway (the closest 3 really has is Lemuria Hub imo)

The other thing I come back for is Octo Expansion! While I loved Side Order a lot, Octo Expansion did a lot better at telling a story across the levels you played. The remixed boss fights it had to offer were really cool despite not changing much. I mean come on, sumo wrestling with Baller?! So cool! Plus the final challenge with fighting Inner Agent 3 was a great fight, probably the best fight in the series although the Octomaw from S1 is real close.
