If it is already out in japan right now, I can easily see it coming out this friday, since that is both when they usually add new themes and it is of course Splatoon's release.

Unfortunately it's true. Nintendo of America in all their wisdom decided that they didn't need to sell the New 3DS and that having only the New 3DS XL would suffice. I guess NoA just didn't see the value in the faceplates or something.

I have owned a 3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS XL's, and a New 3DS.
Need to say, New 3DS XL - The best version of the system that I've found. I consider the change from SD to Micro-SD a big improvement in terms of availability of cheap upgrades.
What i don't like about it is the ABXY buttons. I played the ds lite before and loved the soft squishy buttons, this has clicky buttons and I find it stiff and annoying.
