Perhaps he's considered the 'captain', which would not only explain his confidence smirk, but his hat.

Or Perhaps, during a current match his eyes had met with a maker with potential that has exceeded up to his expectations churning spark within his ego--thus bringing forth co cky smile to emphasize such confidence within his expression; making him want to test his opponents skill in a 1 on 1 skirmish. If all goes well, he'd play all day long if it meant reaching a form of satisfaction known as pleasure.

--In other words. He's having a great time.
