I've been playing Splatoon since the launch of the first game, and my advice is to not forget about support in ranked modes. Many players get tunnel vision of the objective, and getting kills, when they should be taking time to cover turf whenever they can. This is especially useful during pushes, when you can limit the enemy's movement options, and keep your team in the lead, and not even need to directly kill anyone yourself. While at lower ranks you will probably have to take a more direct approach to get your team winning, in S and S+, support can win games.
I have been playing a ton of Duelie Squelchers, and just being able to keep the map in our favor, use point sensors to limit enemy options, and use missles to force them into bad situations, has won me many games. In fact I didn't lose a single game of SZ or RM while ranking up from S to S+.
So I guess one step further into mental game here, the rule is fairly simple in definition, and how you should approach any game as a support type player:
Limit the options of your opponents as much as possible, and open the options of your teammates as much as possible.
This lets your team have a large advantage, since they can win interactions, by just having more possible ways to attack or defend. This allows all your aggressive tunnel visioned teammates to perform optimally. Think about every little interaction, and think about what it is doing in this context, and you will become a much better player, since you will start to be able to predict enemy behavior. Once you can read your opponents, you have a significant advantage.
Sorry if this is confusing and long winded, but this is how I think about the game.
