I would like to point out that level does have an effect on Spyke orders--the chance that he'll provide more unlocked slots. Unfortunately, it maxes out at lv. 16, with the odds we're all familiar with.

So, I got lucky with Spyke and he found these boots with two Defense Up subs. I gladly bought it and went on with unlocking the third one. Thanks @Njok !
