Listen to the whole half minute of that (from 13:25), he says "presetS" implying there are multiple, I mean hell even in the testfire america, europe and Japan had different voice commands
You can't customize preset messages. I also love how you claim that Splatoon is too "fast" for voice chat, yet preset messages are a-okay. News flash: The brain responds faster to noise than text. The mental gymnastics people will go through to defend Nintendo are just baffling. Until you're able to respond to flc's post, I guess I'm done too. The lack of voice chat, whether you like it or not, severely limits the level of strategy you can employ while playing the game with randoms.

so, if I may share my opinion I will. first from those against it's inclusion:

the claim that the game is too fast doesn't make sense to me. it takes too long to say "roller, cover this turf"?

the statement that the chat will use too much memory sounds odd too. the testfire ran flawlessly, so I see no reason that a little more strain can't be put on the server.

I don't see an issue with the wii u mic being bad, because most people would just use a headset anyway.

if people being jerks is too much for you, you could always turn it off. people do it in every other shooter, I imagine.

and the more info you know about any situation, no matter what the situation is, the better the decision you make, and it is definitely risky to stop looking at what is happening around you to look at what is happening elsewhere. plus, good luck finding random people on Skype before the match starts.

now for those supporting its inclusion:

I feel like it would be hard to get into the higher level rankings of tournaments without having set up some kind of voice communication in the first place, so worrying about having it at that point is a little late.

if your not going to use it, why are you assuming other people will.

ive really gotten to the point that im pretty indifferent, but I despise logical flaws.

My friend and I play smash brothers constantly, however his TV is very far from the computer, so he uses his phone to skype me while we play. Today we we're playing, but his phone was dying. So we used to mic chat in between games to chat and god was it the worst mic I've ever heard. Honestly, most people wouldn't understand what the other person is trying to say over the mic. So really, a voice chat option wouldn't be that great.

Not having the ability to verbally communicate with your teammates is a major flaw. I get the decision by Nintendo as to why it's being left out, but it really should have been an option. They should have treated it like the motion controls and just have it set to a default, in this case, VC off. Let's face it, Splatoon isn't going to be the next big eSport, and it's certainly not going to sweep the nation with sales and online playability. There are plenty of 3rd party voice communication options, that for those who are going to be competitive, no VC isn't even going to be an issue.

With that said, not everyone has the means for a workaround. Not everyone has really good placement of their console in relation to a proper communications device within range. Having VC included would have made a big difference to those who are on the fence about the purchase, and to those wanting a bit more convenience from their Wii U. I consider myself lucky. I have a really decent streaming setup, so my VC option will be fine. But I realize not everyone is like that, and not all will be able to utilize the strategy, communication, teamwork, and coordination that comes with having something as simple as a microphone or a headset.

There's absolutely no reason to even argue against VC. What purpose does that even serve? "I'm glad I don't have a standard option in a video game based on competitive multiplayer!" Whaaaaaaat?

I don't think most people are really arguing against it, rather trying to justify the action.
If Splatoon does get the option, we're going to need more than the Wii U gamepad(That mic is god awful). This would mean mass production of headsets, for one game. Nintendo might not want to spend money producing something that will most likely benefit from one title.
Sure, you could argue that the Gamecube adapter only works with smash brothers, but that's a controller. You could map that to just about any game. A headset would only work on online games that people want it for. When we're talking Smash Brothers, that game is heavily concentration based. You're not going to speak very often. I also doubt most people would be talking over Mario Kart.

Personally, I don't care about the lack of Voice chat in Splatoon, the gamepad had horrid quality when not using any peripherals. But I can see how this can be hurtful on the long term for the game's lifespan. Also, the guy above me has no clue about how important communication is in Mario Kart competitive races.

I didn't even realize Mario Kart was even that competitive to begin with. Much less Communication being important. It was always just a fun pass time due to the fact it's got a lot of luck in it. Can't really see communication being important.

Mario Kart Wii is the 6th best selling video game in history. It was one of the largest scenes ever.

I knew it was a high seller, but I didn't realize it was that competitive. I was never that into MK, so the whole thing kinda blew by me. But no matter how competitive it is, I just can't see communication being a valuable asset. It probably is somehow, I just don't see how.

Matches were played 5vs5 and 6vs6 and team attack was always active. It's 100x more important than it ever will be in Splatoon. Take a look on Youtube for clan wars and you should be able to find something decent.

My 2 cents on this.
Would I want voicechat for my matches with my friends or team? Maybe. Sounds convenient.
However the voice chat element in shooting games turns into testosterone powered mlg screaming bs that Splatoon doesn't need any of. Why?
Because Splatoon is fun. Giving it voice chat would turn it into headphone shattering COD grade competitive garbage. If your jimmies are that rustled from losing(and that you'd blame it on a lack of communication instead of a lack of skill), go make a team with your friends on skype chat or w.e is cool nowadays. I'll do the same if I wanna get into ranked battles with friends. If you just wanna have fun like the game's original purpose is intended for, go for how the game is. Simple squid-like kiddies shooting ink at each other. That's it. Simple.

I don't like Voicechat in Games but it would be cool if you could at least Chat with People in the Lobby

There's something I've learned from my experience (although this is only an anecdote, so take it however you like) and that's that people who act like live voice chat in vidja gaems leads to nothing but salt, tears, and swearing are themselves the people who act that way under stress. I've had far more quiet, friendly, callout-rich games of Halo, Doom, Gears of War, and hell, even Call of Duty back when I was still trying it, then I've encountered beliggerent morons who seem to think that being good in a real life fight means jack in a videogame.

And, really. "The way the game was intended?" That's kind of elitist. Well, the socialist kind of elitist, that drags the skilled down because the unskilled can't compete. "aww, stahp playing smash bross wit items off cuz dat's not the default, and turn off teh custom movez too, also no miiz deyre nawt alowd on foar gloeh"

The only valid argument for no voice chat in game is bandwidth. And since console games aren't exactly in the habit of giving me a decent readout of used bandwidth and client-server ping unless I tap the line with Wireshark or something, I wouldn't know for sure. Yeah, proper competitive players will probably run with a headset on VOIP, with earbuds in the GamePad, but voice would be good for the casuals who got a headset for Blops or something. Get them into the spirit.

MK8 has voice chat but everyone prefers Skype.

I honestly think Skype calls would be easier if not provided voice chat.

You can easily add, remove, and callback people.

I have a headset for Wii U that I'm rarely able to use. Fix it, Nintendo. It's ridiculous to need a third party voice chat program as a workaround for a console that has the capability already built in. The Wii U is much more capable than people are giving it credit for.
