Online looks to be ~$20 to ~$30 a year. I've got no opinion on this, just sharing the news.
I can live with this.

Get out of your parents basement and go live life dude. Your utopian views of socialism are silly.Absence of monopoly?!! Please stop spreading those pro-capitalist lies.
Well, just because you like it, to be oppressed and exploited, it doesn't mean that the majority of people is sharing your masochistic life philosophy.Get out of your parents basement and go live life dude. Your utopian views of socialism are silly.
If I had children, I wouldn't let them play this game! :D:DGuys. It's a game about human-squids shooting their bodily fluids at each other. Chill.

They're not necessarily to blame for that. It's very possible they didn't have a specific price in mind and just wanted get a feel of how well or badly paid online services are being taken by potential customers and then think of an appropriate price accordingly, rather than adjusting after they're already stated a price, which wouldn't come off as very professional. While it's a standard strategy, it's not without flaws. Nintendo is not currently on the same standard as the competition, neither in reputation nor in performance of their consoles. It would be logical for them to want to see how well or badly this is received for their own customers rather than carelessly adjusting to the competition despite having a lower standard than them. Not just that, but this strategy cannot be written off as a full success with certainly, even for the competition, considering that both top competitors sold nearly only half of the consoles compared to their previous one after implementing this system. While it can't be in the slighest assumed that this is solely due to paid online, going with the assumption that paid online had nothing to do with it would be careless. As chuggaaconroy posted in the comments, a lot of the initial backlash could've been prevented if they just said the price upright because a 30$ yearly fee shouldn't upset anyone. People immediately assumed the worst, that the services were going to cost as much as the xbox/ps counterparts but fortunately that's not the case.
