Your Opinion on Paid Online

Still concerned that (IF splatoon online play is part of this subscription service) we will be paying for the same service we get now, just with a nintendo brand discord service attached, and that this may still deter would-be splatoon 2ers.

But alas, if this price remains true, we've at least hit the threshold were I'm not feeling like I'm getting completely ripped off and thus un-willing to pay.

. . . Still too early too pass a full decision =/

So, 30 a year max. This is why I despise video game speculation, no matter what it is people whip themselves into a frothing mass over a lack of details, even if those details aren't far off.

30 a year translates to 2.50 a month. I have a crappy low-paying job and I earn that amount in just a few minutes. If you're a kid, do some chores. If you're a teen, get a part-time job. If you're an adult, suck it up. The features are minimal because the price is low. There's no justifying the nonsense seen in threads like this at this point. Gamers are never frugal where it counts.

Called it! I have no issue paying that. Go sell an old game you don't like, tada you paid for your subscription
Unless you sell it to gamestop, then you're a fifth of the way there. HA!

Was hoping it'd start off low because it lacks the robustness and experience of Sony's and Microsoft's online services, but I'm surprised it's that low.

It is definitely best to set it up so low. I doubt Nintendo has what it takes to create an online service rivaling that of Microsoft and Sony's (which have had years to establish themselves and get better,) and get away with charging up to $60 for it, so $30 is a nice price point for them, and what they could potentially offer right now.

Hm, 20$ - 30$ a year. Good to know they weren't as stupid as to go with the prices of the competitors. Although compared to the competitors, even mere 20$ is expensive considering that Nintendo provides little to no premium services compared to PSN and XBOX Live. Maybe they'll add a little something, who knows. At least I'm happy to say that this doesn't shake me off.

Get out of your parents basement and go live life dude. Your utopian views of socialism are silly.
Well, just because you like it, to be oppressed and exploited, it doesn't mean that the majority of people is sharing your masochistic life philosophy.

Speaking as another hourly-wager with a crap payrate, $30/year is totally doable. I'm not even there for the nostalgia downloads, just Sploon2. If this improves the service, I'm all for it.

As chuggaaconroy posted in the comments, a lot of the initial backlash could've been prevented if they just said the price upright because a 30$ yearly fee shouldn't upset anyone. People immediately assumed the worst, that the services were going to cost as much as the xbox/ps counterparts but fortunately that's not the case.

My opinion remains the same, but it's a bit easier to swallow not having to pay as much as expected.

They're not necessarily to blame for that. It's very possible they didn't have a specific price in mind and just wanted get a feel of how well or badly paid online services are being taken by potential customers and then think of an appropriate price accordingly, rather than adjusting after they're already stated a price, which wouldn't come off as very professional. While it's a standard strategy, it's not without flaws. Nintendo is not currently on the same standard as the competition, neither in reputation nor in performance of their consoles. It would be logical for them to want to see how well or badly this is received for their own customers rather than carelessly adjusting to the competition despite having a lower standard than them. Not just that, but this strategy cannot be written off as a full success with certainly, even for the competition, considering that both top competitors sold nearly only half of the consoles compared to their previous one after implementing this system. While it can't be in the slighest assumed that this is solely due to paid online, going with the assumption that paid online had nothing to do with it would be careless.
