When I'm talking to other people about my splatoon-friends I often just refer to them as the Squids (even though most of them including myself are octos) or the Squid Kids (even though most of them including myself are adults). I guess they're not terribly accurate or inclusive titles but they get the point across, lol.

now that you mention it though, "turflings" is a fun collective term for the fanbase. ("inkfish" too but that is also a real word, lol)
