Octolings In The Wild (This Is Bad)

It's not anticipated for this to be an incredibly widespread issue, but one or two Squidboards users have already encountered this problem, and we wanted to make sure to alert everyone.

A kernel exploit for the Wii U has now been made public for Wii U's on an older firmware version. The simple and relevant explanation of what this means is that it is now much easier for unscrupulous folks to modify their Splatoon save files.

The very negative side effect of this, is it means a person could potentially modify their save file to change their character ID from 0 or 1 (Inkling Boy and Inkling Girl respectively) to 2, which represents Octolings.

Playing as Octolings would be super cool! ...but only when the game is made for it to happen...

If you encounter a player that has done this, you need to make sure to stay in the lobby until they leave it, and then play one more match. This should ensure the game doesn't put their hacked Octoling character into your Inkopolis Plaza. The Plaza is not programmed to handle Octolings, and so if one is placed into it, your game will crash whenever it tries to load them. This includes the title screen, which means your save file is effectively 'soft-locked' and cannot be used until either Nintendo patches this issue, or your plaza is cleared by the beginning of a Splatfest.

It is possible to back up any of your Wii U save files to a flash drive, and we'd recommend doing so if you wish to be absolutely safe.

^That's from last month, though. I swear, I get the feeling you might be framing NWPlayer123 or something. You may have gotten this whole thing from that video alone. Just stop it right now.

Dude, is insulting someone the right thing to do here? You're just taking this whole thing too far now. There's no need to call somebody stupid. It's very rude and you should know this by now.

You better watch your language before you might get a ban or something.

I'm assuming "Splatfest fixed it", means to be continued on to "...until you bump into one again."

Or am i just overthinking it and we're finally actually free?

I'm still going to wait for the news feed to say it though, or another member that i've trusted says so.

It's inflammatory bait. Laugh at it, report it, ignore it. This person is seriously buttmad at the moment and we should give them a day or two to cool off.

Ok this argument needs to end
fighting against each other isn't gonna help us get anywhere

Well, if the hacker is active, we would be having a lot of reports of where and when it happens. If the best we seen is one or two videos a month ago, then it's quite hard to believe there is one out there. Heck, the hacker probably didn't know what s/he did till people caught wind and stop altogether.

Even if there is one, just backup your files if possible (flash drive, external HD, etc.). This banter and name calling is quite cancerous to this forum.

I just don't know what to do.
despite all I've said in this thread, I was truly mortified and conflicted if I wanted to play or not. After playing for 4+ hours, I felt pretty safe and encouraged others to not put down the game when this event was it it's peak, when the whole plaza was filled with hilarious "BWAR DA OKTOLING 'O' DOOM" and silly stuff. Just keep playing splatoon, you're doing the universe a sin by putting this game down over a phony hacker.

I'm just really confused by the uproar. I own both the JP and US versions of the game, so I'll just play JP version for now. :P

I haven't encountered this problem yet, and from what I've heard, you should be safe if you find a hacker in your match if you just disconnect before the match ends.

Well, somebody in the other thread said it wouldn't make a difference. I honestly don't know what to believe at this point though. There was a lot of opposites being flung around.
