"I'm almost there," Agent 234 muttered as she crept up to an Inkling agent who was busy splatting Octotroopers. "Come on...come closer..."
Just as she put her eye to the scope of her charger, the Inkling turned around with her Hero Shot, looking like she meant business. 234 hesitated for a moment, but raised her gun nonetheless. The Inkling's face showed through the scope, and she looked...concerned? Her finger gently lowered 234's charger and looked into her eyes. As she stayed there, something keeping her from pulling the trigger, the agent placed her hands on Lana's goggles. She nearly grabbed the agent's arms in protest, but the Inkling proceeded to lift them off. The Octoling blinked, then shook her head, and looked around her. The Inkling gently placed the goggles on the ground and helped Lana up. "Huh...?"
The Inkling spoke in a language 234 did not understand and placed a hand on her shoulder, supposedly a gesture of comfort. In the little Octarian she knew, she added, taking off her helmet. "My name...name is...Joy."
"Joy," the Octarian girl muttered under her breath. Trying her best to be understandable, she said, "My name is Lana. Lana Ike. But...I'm known as Number 234 among my peers."
"That is so beautiful," Joy admitted. "So...fresh? If I say it right?"
Lana smiled a little bashfully. "You do. Your Octarian is good, especially for an Inkling...where did you learn it?"
"My captain taught me," she said, blushing a little. "But only little. I feel I am not com...munic...ating good."
"We should go," Lana muttered. "My fellow agents will probably arrive, and I don't want to..." She turned around. There was 278 - her younger brother - grasping his Shooter with an emotionless fury. Another Inkling agent, wielding a Charger, came up behind him, but 278 was too focused on trying to splat Agent Joy. Frustrated, the agent grabbed 278 and pulled him back, causing him to drop his Splattershot on the ground. As he reached in vain for it, the other agent pulled his goggles off and he gasped and blinked. The agent let him go, and he rubbed his eyes where the goggles had been. In clear Octarian, the second agent talked to him. I could make out what she was saying.
"You should be glad I found you. Your friends might not be as lucky."
"What are you going to do about them?" the boy asked. "Can you give them a chance?"
"I'll try," she replied. "For now, you're coming with me back to Inkopolis. There are already some Octarian refugees we've successfully moved there."
"I'll stay behind and take care of the incoming army," Joy told her in Inkling. "Take those two back for me. I've got this."
"Right," the other agent replied, before placing one hand on each Octoling. "If I can't make it to Inkopolis, I'll just make sure they're safe."
The Inkling removed her helmet, revealing a head of short, blunt, violet hair. "By the way, I'm Shizue. I'm taking you with me. You'll be safe, I promise."
"Then my name is Lana," the female Octoling replied. "This is my brother, Noah." She indicated the male Octoling.
"You know, like the guy who built the big boat," he muttered a bit shyly.
"You're very smart, Noah," Shizue said, causing Noah to blush a bit. "Not many know about the First Flood. Anyway, I'm taking you back somewhere safe. There's a kettle out of here that's not far. Come on."
The Octolings curiously followed Shizue as she lead them to a tea kettle, where she entered squid form and slipped through the metal wiring. The kettle screeched satisfactorily and Lana and Noah followed her in.
(Yeah, I'm calling the Biblical flood the "First Flood."
Also, do you think the "tea kettle system" is an okay way to get around Octo Valley? I mean, it's not like the characters of Mario would hop on dots to go places, so...:P
This is probably more of a backstory than anything else.)
